Uncensored: Daring to Embrace the Entire Bible, by Brian Cosby

Are you embarrassed by the Bible?
The Bible is full of stories that make us uncomfortable: Israelites stoned adulterers, slaves were told to obey masters, Jesus declared that sinners go to hell, and God commanded His people to kill others, both young and the old alike. In response, many of us opt for a feel-good faith by embracing only the socially acceptable verses and passages.

In Uncensored, Brian Cosby disrupts this deadly trajectory by explaining why all Scripture is God-breathed, holy, and essential to us as believers. And he invites you to quit hiding behind the fig leaf of half-truth and embrace a healthy, passionate faith.

Review
“Those who are committed to living, believing, and embracing ‘the whole counsel of God’ are never at liberty to sift through verses, discarding those less desirable to our thinking and personal philosophy. Brian Cosby does an excellent job of demonstrating the danger and unhealthy consequences to our Christian faith if we choose to ignore or censor difficult portions of Scripture. Uncensored is a clear call to embrace the whole of Scripture so that it will capture your heart and mind, radically driving you forward in your Christian journey.”
- Steven J. Lawson

"A sensible, accessible, and informed guide to help us have greater confidence in God’s Word. This book will give you a new appreciation for how all the pieces of the Bible fit together into a coherent story."
- Michael Horton

"If we are honest, most of us would admit that we have--at some time or another--stumbled across those portions of Scripture that have left us confused (even troubled) regarding their precise meaning and place in the Bible. Whether it is the doctrine of creation or the doctrine of hell, the problem of evil, the redemptive-historical structure of Scripture regarding the Law of God or the Bible's teaching about the role of husbands and wives, Brian Cosby has given us a guide to help us read the Bible Uncensored."
- Nicholas T. Batzig

"In a world where nothing shameful is now censored, it's strange that the church is censoring what it has no reason to be ashamed of. Brian Cosby's needed and helpful book will help many Christians to understand, defend, and promote their faith, and enable them not only to say "I am not ashamed of the Gospel," but also "I am not ashamed of the Bible."
- David Murray

"In my own Christian life, I know how difficult it can be to ignore difficult passages in favor of the ones that are encouraging. This is why Dr. Brian Cosby wrote his excellent new book, Uncensored. I highly recommend this book and believe it will help you grow in your knowledge of, love for, and enjoyment of living by God's Word."
- Dave Jenkins

Refreshing
By RuthSophia
What a refreshing work! While I disagree with Brian in some of the finer points he makes (not being staunchly Reformed or Calvinist) I can still heartily recommend this book.

I was skeptical going in to this work - with so many churches and Christians (over) emphasizing love and grace or saying things like "I'm a Christian, but I don't believe X (that's in the Bible)" it can certainly be disheartening. Even if your congregation is pretty on point, it's easy to feel isolated, like you're the odd the one out - like there really aren't that many people out there who really, truly believe the Bible ... even in the church!

Uncensored was such an encouragement that there ARE others out there who take their faith - and the Word - seriously.

Brian tackles many hard issues that most people shy away from, uh, censor, nowadays ... yep, even in the church. Dare I say, especially in the church?

But the truth is that God addresses issues that make us uncomfortable. Topics like sin, hell, and suffering he addresses as length.

Brian addresses both why we as Christians tend to be embarrassed by certain parts of the Bible and why we tend to censor them. He also addresses why we should be unafraid to embrace the entirety of Scripture.

Undoubtedly there will be some who read the work and shake their head about Brian "just not getting it" ... the whole love and grace thing, but they would be missing the entire point of the book! Brian's point isn't that love and grace aren't in the Scriptures - far from it! But that we also need to be comfortable with the wrath and judgement of God. These things work hand in hand and are not exclusive to each other.

My one little quibble was when Brian was discussing suffering. I don't disagree with anything he said, but I wish he had mentioned that sometimes bad things happen because we live in a fallen world, and suffering is a consequence of that. God can certainly use that for good, but it's not God's fault that there is bad. It's man's fault, and it's by God's grace that things aren't worse off than they are.

Still, all in all I definitely recommend this work to those who are looking to be challenged in their faith, and those who need encouragement that there are others out there who truly believe the whole word of God.

I received a complimentary ecopy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Why Believers Can Confidently Embrace All God's Word
By VicG
Brian Cosby in his new book, “Uncensored” published by David C Cook gives us Daring to Embrace the Entire Bible.

From the back cover: Are you embarrassed by the Bible?

Let’s start off with an easy question shall we? How many days did creation take? Science tells us millions of years, God tells us He did it in six days and took a rest on the seventh day. Which version do you believe? Pastor Cosby gives lots of information and you will have to choose your answer and, Let me tell you now, some of what he presents will shake your belief system. We have made a mix of what science tells us and what God tells us and Pastor Cosby wants to purify our belief system. And he wants to do it in two parts. Part One: Embarrassed By The Bible shows how the fundamental unity of the Old and New Testaments helps put many of the “offensive” passages in their proper perspective. Part Two: The Art Of Censorship examines eight of the most frequently “picked over” themes in The Bible and why an unashamed affirmation of these doctrines is needed for a healthy, God-honoring faith. Getting what The Bible tells us correctly will provide us a healthy, balanced faith. And the healthier we are the better off we will be to everyone around us. I recommend it highly.

A much needed book (sadly)
By Zack Ford
Are you embarrassed by the Bible?

Most of us would instinctively answer that question with a resounding, "NO!" But what if we think about the question a little more, a little deeper. Functionally, does your refusal to talk about certain texts or particular doctrines that the Bible addresses show that you are, indeed, embarrassed by the Bible?

Brian Cosby, pastor of Wayside Presbyterian Church, is convinced that American Evangelicalism is, by and large, practically and functionally embarrassed by the Bible. And after examining his own life, he came to the conclusion that, even if slightly, he actually was as well. It's this topic that he addresses in his new book: Uncensored: Daring to Embrace the Entire Bible.

In the book, Cosby looks at the landscape of American Evangelicalism – replete with a focus on feel-good-faith, non-Scriptural, "Scriptural" phrases ("ask Jesus into your heart" anyone?), and an awkward absence of a focus on essential doctrines like sin and repentance — and argues that many of our churches, pastors, and Christians are embarrassed by the Bible, whether they would use that language or not.

"If you listen closely to our Christianese, you will notice a large amount of extrabiblical thoughts squeezed in. Try to find 'God helps those who help themselves,' 'Invite Jesus into your heart,' or 'Accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior' in the Bible. They're not there. Not only are we cherry-picking the Scriptures, but we're also inserting our own feel-good notions ... The question remains: Can the church continue to cling to a fig leaf faith — uncomfortable by the edgy and seemingly archaic — or is it time to unashamedly embrace the God-inspired, Christ-exalting, and life-transforming truth of the entire Bible, offensive passages and all?" (21).

The Structure

Cosby divides the book into 2 parts. The first part surveys the landscape and examines "the fundamental unity of the Old and New Testaments" which "helps put many of these 'offensive' passages in their proper perspective" (22). It is in these chapters that some of the most common "problem" passages of Scripture are dealt with — whether directly or indirectly — and put into their proper historical and hermeneutic perspective (i.e. polygamy in the Old Testament, "slaying the wicked," and "fearing" God). Cosby also looks in this first section at some of the unintended consequences in our worship, ministry, and evangelism when we censor the Scriptures.

In part 2, Cosby examines 7 of the "most frequently censored themes in the Bible and why an unashamed affirmation of these doctrines is needed for a healthy and fruitful faith" (22).

"When we censor the full character of God, we soften His justice, elevate man, and devalue our need for the cross. But when we embrace the entire Bible, we are freed from making God 'fit' our politically correct, tame caricatures of a god who seems no more omnipotent than a divine grandpa. But like Aslan, God isn't safe. The Lion from the tribe of Judah has conquered. Eternally self-sufficient, He's dependent on no one. And His Word reveals His majesty and glory from Genesis to Revelation (23).

Most Censored Themes

The second part of the book is the "meat" of the book, where Cosby deals with 7 of the most censored themes in the Bible, and then argues why we must unashamedly affirm these doctrines in order to have a healthy and fruitful faith. So what are these themes that Cosby argues are the most censored in Evangelicalism?

(1) The True Nature of God — We make God in our image.
(2) Creation — We are embarrassed to affirm that God really did create everything.
(3) Sin — We mask the ugly, true reality of sin.
(4) Suffering — We act like it doesn't happen to "good" faith-filled Christians.
(5)Hell — We hide the true horrors of Hell as given in Scripture.
(6) The Sufficiency of the Word — We chase after "gimmicks" and "success" in an entertainment-driven church.
(7) Parenting — We downplay that God-given responsibility parents have for their children's faith, giving them an "outsourcing" option in the church's programs.

Conclusion

Sadly, this is a much-needed book, especially for the younger generation of Christians (of whom I am a part of). As each successive generation comes along, it seems as though the pressure to cave to the cultural norms and censor the Scriptures is stronger and stronger. As this pressure increases, the church must stand to equip and empower Christians to embrace the Bible — the whole Bible.

Brian Cosby has done a great service in this book of giving a thoughtful, complete, and insightful treatment of this epidemic of censoring and being embarrassed by the Bible. And he does so in a very readable and accessible fashion. As such, this book will be a great help to you whether you're a pastor or in the pew, a grandpa or a grade-school student, a thirty-something parent or a teenager.

No matter who you are, you have certainly faced this temptation from one degree to another — and may have even caved to it. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this book and be recommitted to the whole counsel of God and equipped to help others do the same.

In accordance with FTC regulations, I would like to thank David C Cook Publishers for providing me with a review copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
