About the Author
Annie Groves was born and lived in the north-west of England all of her life. She was the author of the Pride family series, Ellie Pride, Connie's Courage and Hettie of Hope Street, for which she drew upon her own family's history, picked up from listening to her grandmother's stories when she was a child. Her next set of novels was the World War II series Goodnight Sweetheart, Some Sunny Day, The Grafton Girls and As Time Goes By. These were followed by the Campion series, Across the Mersey, Daughters of Liverpool, The Heart of the Family, Where the Heart Is and When the Lights Go on Again, which are also based on recollections from members of her family, who come from the city of Liverpool. My Sweet Valentine follows on from Home for Christmas and London Belles and is the third in this series, which introduces a set of glorious characters living in Article Row in Holborn.Annie Groves, whose real name was Penny Halsall, also wrote under the name of Penny Jordan and was an international bestselling author of over 170 novels with sales of over 84 million copies.Sadly, Penny Halsall died in 2011. She left a wonderful legacy of heart-warming novels for many more fans to discover and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.The final books in the Article Row series, Only a Mother Knows and A Christmas Promise, will be published posthumously in 2013.

Connie's Courage

I wanted to read this, as had read the first in the sequel of three. I enjoyed it very much, and had great trouble putting the book down to do other things. I very much enjoy these stories based in Liverpool around the time of World War 2, the postwar hardships of rationing etc. and the social snobbery of those times.

I loved this book so much, couldn't put it down a second book after Ellie's Pride....both books fantastic, and if you are like me, I like to read the first book first. This author has a great way of writing to keep the story flowing, and not a lot of unnecessary words. If you like this era ,this is the story for you. It is a shame that this author is no longer alive to give us the pleasure she has done with all her work.....read her stories please.

As a scholar who has worked as a newspaper editor, Willis is convincing about the need to link the academy and the vineyard. In his prologue and epilogue, he clearly―often eloquently―makes the case for more communication, trust, and respect between thinkers and doers. Yet the eight chapters forming the heart of the book might do little to promote his cause. In essence, they summarize dozens of articles that appeared in the 1980s in two prominent research forums, Journalism Quarterly and Newspaper Research Journal, and arrange the summaries according to theme. About the Author

Jim Willis is associate professor of Journalism at Ball State University and is an Indianapolis-based consultant to the media. A veteran of 12 years in newspapers, Willis is a former editor at the Dallas Morning News and reporter at the Daily Oklahoman, and he holds the PhD in journalism from the University of Missouri. His first book, Surviving in the Newspaper Business, appeared in 1988.

Robinson's book on the Art of Inlay is terrific and instructive in two aspects. First, the examples of his inlays are beautiful and bound to give the beginning and even advanced students many ideas. Second, the instructive content and presentation are first rate. It is easy to see in Larry's lucid explanations, that he is an excellent teacher who has organized and presented his material in a way to make it easily accessible to students at all levels. While I bought the book to learn how to inlay a guitar fingerboard and peghead, Larry has given me many ideas on other forms of the art of inlay. I strongly recommend this book.

I bought this book to learn how to do inlay. The subtitle for this book "Design and Technique for Fine Woodworking" is misleading. Don't get me wrong if you want to look at great inlay work this book is for you. But if by some chance you actually want to learn how to do it yourself don't waste your time or your dollar. I recommend, "The Art of Wood Inlay" by George Stevens if you are looking for useful how too information.

"Poems ask only that they be heard, which is the purpose of the slam," Bob Holman says. It has been ten years since Glazner produced the first National Poetry Slam (perhaps best described as a competitive reading), but many poetry enthusiasts remain virtually unaware of the phenomenon. This volume collects an assortment of slam poems and articles about the slams (setting up, judging, becoming participants, and group pieces). Some articles, such as Lisa Martinovic on using props or Daniel S. Solis on slam aesthetics and strategy, are elemental but extremely useful, while Patricia Smith's brilliant piece on persona poetry adds little to the concept of the slam. Adding to the confusion is the growth of the audience for slams and the broadening of their scope to include many poets published by the academy. Are these the same poets whose poems work perfectly well on the page and would not readily be labeled "performance" poetry? Contributors' notes would have been useful. "Good slamming starts with good writing," Solis states, although at times the material here seems closer to stand-up comedy. A good breaking-in for first time readers

One of the most accesible books around for anyone even remotely interested in poetry. If you've never been to an open mic or a slam, give this one a whirl...it'll make you want to go (and maybe even slip a poem in your pocket before you lock the door). If you've been to an open mic and wondered what else was out there that was like what you just saw, this book captures a great many of those elements for you.
Not just a book of poems, throughout the work are placed a great many essays written by long-time, well-known National slam poets (Taylor Mali, Danny Solis, etc.) about nearly every aspect of reading and performing one's work...a long-overdue codification of information for performing poets at ANY level.
Some of the poems contained within are national favorites, a few legend, but they ALL contain a lesson about performance poetry: that it starts on the page.
A MUST have for any poet who is (or is considering) performing their poetry before audiences in any capacity. A necessary bit of packing for any poet with national aspirations of slamming, touring or just reading.

Better than Good

Gary Glazner has accomplished something unprecedented with this collection -- he has produced the first national-level anthology archiving the Poetry Slam as its own form, in a book by, for, and about the participants. As such, it has many of the aspects of Slam itself. The voices in both the poetry and the accompanying essays are diverse and passionate, representing all ages, races, genders and geography that this Poetry Nation has to offer. For anyone interested in learning more or starting their own Poetry Slam, this is a terrific jumpstart, as well as a great collection of favorites for poets and audience members.

Solid collection lacking a full historical perspective

3.5 stars, really. This anthology is a solid collection representing a wide range of voices STILL involved in the National Poetry Slam scene. Unfortunately, many voices are left out precisely because they are no longer involved in the scene which weakens the collection's importance as an historical document. Nevertheless, the poetry selected, along with the mixed bag of essays, makes this an invaluable supplement to ALOUD, still the king of "poetry slam" anthologies.

Could have been half the length and twice as interesting.

The book was fairly interesting. The author rarely explained how he came to some of the profiling conclusions that he reached. It seemed that the book became repetitive in the sense that the author would just say "I predicted the killer would have this set of traits, and lo and behold, he did!"
The author has led a very impressive life, and he is very aware of that fact.

I am referring to the audio cassette version of Mindhunter. After ordering it twice here on Amazon and instead getting a paperback romance called My Loving Enemy by Pat Wallace, I knew something was amiss.

So I bought it on ebay where I could clearly see a photo of the exact item the seller was selling.

I am now holding both items in my hands, and they do have the exact same ISBN's. So I looked online and indeed sometimes completely different books can have the same ISBN.

JOHN Douglas as mindhunter, agent, lawman and human being is just the tip of the iceberg. His landmark tell-all is tantalyzing in all the right places - giving just enough information regarding the Bureau's developing school/s of thought with respect to applied psychoanlytics during it's early years to have you literally begging for more. Case history, per se, as an agent of delivery is used sparingly. Information on methodologies are without any [tedious] detailing while Douglas consistently follows up with effective, sometimes harrowing!, anectodal implementation of such. ( more often, a second consideration or 'extra-' careful analysis yields Douglas himself to have been the direct causal agent of the [eventual] apprehension of UNSUB X, lending a 'real-life Superman' air to an outwardly simple man, nd one whom is unlikely to toot his own horn regardless of a legendary status.) ...Over-all : MINDHUNTER spares us lackluster minutiae of statistics, development, Bureau directives, etc. Instead, any average untrained John Q finds himself priveledged to - fortunately & fleetingly - prowl in the shoes of an elite: an expertly-trained, man-to-machine - MindHunter

About the Author
Carolyn Wheater teaches middle school and upper school mathematics at the Nightingale-Bamford School in New York City. Educated at Marymount Manhattan College and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, she has taught math and computer technology for 30 years to students from preschool through college. She is a member of National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the Association of Teachers in Independent Schools.

Using quite frequently

I purchased this item for several reasons. I like the progression of the lessons. I work with students duridng the year and in the summer they would like to review specific topics. This book helps to determine any weaknesses that need to be strengthened. I am working with different students on different levels using this book. It provides enough for each.

not for the novice

I purchased this book to brush up on my math, and after 18 years of not using advance math, I have forgotten just about everything. With that said, this book is horrible if you require more than the answers. Full solutions should have been provided and are not. If you are not good with math or not in a classroom setting with peers and teachers to work with, do not purchase this book. Lots of typos which confuse things as well... "...if the inequality sign is , and a ..." comma should be
