About the Author
Born in Seoul, Korea, ROBIN HA grew up reading and drawing comics. At fourteen she moved to the United States. After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in illustration, she moved to New York City and started a career in the fashion industry. Her work has been published in independent comics anthologies including Secret Identities and The Strumpet, as well as in the pages of Marvel Comics and Heavy Metal Magazine. Her blog Banchan in 2 Pages features Korean recipe comics. She currently resides in Falls Church, Virginia.

Spicy Octopus Over Rice (Nakji Dupbap)

This is a supersimple, delicious seafood dish to soak up your rice with. I've used frozen octopus in this recipe to cut down the prep time. You can also use squid instead of the octopus. 
Cooking time: 20 minutes  Makes: 3 or 4 servings

Ingredients:
2 pounds octopus, cleaned and cut into bite-size pieces
1 medium carrot, peeled
1 Korean green or red chile pepper
1 medium onion
3 green onions, white and green parts
1/4 medium green cabbage
3 cloves garlic, peeled
1(1/2-inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled
2 tablespoons Korean red chile flakes
1 tablespoon soy sauce
2 teaspoons sugar
3 tablespoons olive oil
Salt 
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
4 cups freshly cooked rice
Toasted sesame seeds, for garnish 

Fresh octopus might be hard to find in regular grocery stores, but if you do find it, make sure you get rid of the intestine and clean it before using it. 
You can find already cleaned and cut octopus in the frozen seafood section of Korean grocery stores. 

Prep the Veggies! 
Wash all of the veggies. Cut the carrot and chile into thin pieces and cut the onion, green onions, and cabbage into chunky bite-size pieces. 
Slice the ginger, then crush the garlic and ginger. 

The Sauce
Mix the chile paste, 1 tablespoon of the chile flakes, soy sauce, and sugar.
Set aside. 

Quickly blanch the octopus in boiling water for a minute, then set it aside. 
Octopus loses its delicious juice and becomes tough and rubbery when it's overcooked. So DON'T OVERCOOK IT!

Over high heat, heat up the oil with the garlic, ginger, and the remaining 1 tablespoon chile flakes for a few seconds, then add the onion, carrot, and cabbage. Season with a pinch of salt and saute it for a couple of minutes.
Add the blanched octopus, chile, green onions, and the sauce. Saute for a couple of minutes, until all the ingredients are cooked.

Finally
Turn off the heat, drizzle with toasted sesame oil, and mix well.
Serve over freshly cooked rice and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds for garnish!

The first and only cookbook I've read cover to cover

This book is much more than a cookbook! You learn about Korean food and culture through entertaining comics, and the recipes show you how you can make many different dishes using the same handful of staples. The illustrations (there must be 100s) are adorable and descriptive. I especially love the gorgeous watercolors that mark each new chapter--the paintings somehow make the dishes look more delicious than high-res/styled photographs would. Even if you don't cook you'll enjoy the author's stories told through comics, the amazing artwork on each spread, and you'll probably end up cooking some tasty treats from the book!

What a fun read! I bought this as a present for my sister and we spent an enjoyable (and at time contentious :)) evening making the Japchae recipe. We ended up making a few changes here and there but it was delicious. I highly recommend this book.

Very interesting concept that works surprisingly well of combining comic book illustration with food recipes!

This book is so much fun! Saw the author at a book festival doing a cooking demo and got my copy signed.

I live in a large metropolitan area and have access to international markets, which for seaweeds and some ingredients you will definitely need (or Amazon) but at least once the initial purchases are made for your pantry you can use the individual ingredients many times. Her recipes are fairly straightforward, some have more steps than others, but everything I have made has been good. The seaweed salad recipe has become a regular in our lineup, and what a great way to get greens and minerals in the body during this summer heat when greens aren't growing much. Its educational, practical, and I think would be a good gateway for kids and teens to hook them into an interest in food.

Wish the author would collaborate with other cooks to illustrate a series of these type of books. I find without photographs, rather, its hand drawn of all the steps and the finished product helps the reader to not have as much stress about your dish not looking like a very stylized food photo like most cookbooks have these days, and focus on having an enjoyable time making simple good home meal preparations. Its also educational with Korean culture tidbits spread throughout the book.

A Good Introduction to Duras

"10:30 on a Summer Night" is by far the best of the four novels in this book, focusing on murder and infidelity during a vacation outside Madrid. "Moderato Cantible" is good but not as intriguing as "10:30 on a Summer Night" and is about an alcoholic mother developing an odd relationship with a stranger in a café on the way home from her son's piano lesson. "The Square" has some good lines but is generally slow, focusing solely on a salesman and a servant talking in the park.

Save The Lover for later; start with the novellas.

Duras seems like the Simone Weil of fiction: her characters philosophize while they get undressed and into bed. While Duras covers the same material (man, woman, love, deceit) at least these are fine subjects in the hands of a master crafter. I don't think we can hold it against her for writing them over and over.

The truths of love and suffering.

Spying this book in my hand, my husband asked suspiciously, "Is that one of those books that only you like - the kind with completely no plot?"

I assured him that only one of the four novellas has almost no plot - The Square - and I admitted that, yes, I loved it. Just a housemaid and a wanderer talking in the park as the light fades - it is enough. Especially when the characters are forever saying things like, "Either I shall be unhappy in the same way as everyone else is, or I shall not be unhappy at all."

The third novella, 10:30 on a Summer Night, succeeds as a work of suspense and floats through the mind like an art house film. (My husband seeks PLOT, honest-to-god dramatic action - I promised him he'd enjoy it.)

The fourth, The Afternoon of Mr. Andesmas, proceeds like the late afternoon light in the story, gradually revealing the landscape and the figures within it. It made me realize that I'd perhaps never read a story about a rich old man who was also dignified and loving. I found it marvelous.

Only the second novella, Moderato Cantabile, seemed less interesting, an imitation of the others, with several passages which I admit I found repeatedly incomprehensible - though its account of vomiting at a dinner part is. . . nearly as riveting as being in the same situation oneself.

The second and the third novellas made me wonder if anyone has ever taught on a course on "the Literature of Alcoholism" - let's say: Hemingway, Hart Crane, Flann O'Brien, Barthelme and Duras. It often seems to me that alcoholic writers belong to the same drunken nation. A sad, funny and charming country - though it is sometimes hard to resist the temptation to count bottles.

These books are experiments - and 50 to 80 pages is a perfect length for an experiment. To me it seems unfortunate that fiction is so often limited to stories under 15 pages and novels over 250. I sometimes wonder if the length in-between might be more conducive to the form.

Duras does away with the excessive characterization, plotting and description that often weigh on the novel. Like an ancient Buddhist scripture translated from a palm leaves, these novels seek to approach life and suffering directly - the honest ache of which they speak may come as a relief.

What was he thinking

I loved Danni. She was a funny, quirky and relatable. The fact that the book was set in England was great. I did not get some of the references but it did not drag me from the story. Breaking out of your comfort zone to reach for the dream of having it all is a great storyline.

The story itself reads like a memoir with dialog. Showing only Danni's point of view. Which was really good because it distracted you that she was having an affair with a married man. I was glad that she was conflicted about the whole thing and that she could not help falling in love with him because their love was too great. Sleeping is the wife's bed I did not enjoy.

In some places, I was saying, "what was he thinking" so it would have been nice to know what Oliver's deal was. I found it difficult to justify a man cheating on his wife. If he was that unhappy leave, don't stay until something better comes around. It made me not like him as much as I should.

I really liked when she left with Rod. It was relatable, a quick hot fling with a handsome ski instructor, no better way to get over a boring life.
It also served as the rebound to clear way to find her true love in Oliver.

Oliver and Danni had real chemistry it was easy to see way they were drawn together. The ups and down of their relationship made for a real roller coaster ride.

The additional storyline of the best friend dying added an emotional pull to the book as a whole and pulled it all together nicely.

A Mature Romance with Emotional Depth

Danni Lewis has always taken the safe path in life and love. But a devastating loss forces her to reevaluate everything. On a whim, she heads to France looking for change and leaves behind her safety net to take a chance.

Once she's there she meets Olivier du Pape and throws caution to the wind, falling for a married man--something she swore she would never do. But love isn't always what you expect it to be? Still, does this love stand a chance?

At first, I was a bit bored with Danni. I wanted to yell at her to take a chance and do something. But then her world was rocked by loss, and Danni took charge. The story took off then, too, because the author did an amazing job of crafting a heartbreaking situation that led this main character to a heart-filled love story. Plus, there's something so endearing about Danni; she battles her conscience and struggles with right and wrong instead of just feeling something and going for it.

Weak at the Knees is a mature romance with emotional depth. As much as I wanted to see Danni in love, I wanted more to see her grow as a person and believe in her instincts. I cared about her, and that is the hallmark of a good read in my humble opinion.

Take a chance on Weak at the Knees, and don't give up early on. Danni, and the story, really grow on you.

Love is a funny emotion, and the heart has an unexpected way of changing people's minds and choices.

Weak At The Knees is an emotional story of a young woman's journey of self-discovery and coming of age. Author Jo Kessel weaves an intriguing story set in London and the French Alps, and told in the first person narrative about love, loss and relationships. The reader follows Danni on her personal journey of self-discovery; moving out of her comfort zone, making changes, and taking control of her life; and finding true love. I loved that the author allows the reader to get into Danni's head and discover who she is and what makes her tick: her inner demons, hopes, dreams, fears, and feelings about of love and loss. While Danni and Olivier's relationship is central to the storyline, the beauty of the story is watching Danni come into her own and discover the life that she wants to live.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the richly detailed descriptive settings of London and the French Alps. The author transports the reader to these wonderful locations with her vivid portrait of the culture and scenery that makes you want to travel to see the historic landmarks of London and the romantic snow capped mountains and villages of the French Alps.

Weak At The Knees is an emotionally intense story that deals with real life issues like chasing dreams, love, loss, relationships, adultery, and finding your true self that will leave you "weak at the knees."
