Simply stunning.

This isn’t just a simple story, it’s a simply beautiful love story……

I wasn’t sure going into this one, not because of the ménage aspect of it, cause I do love a good ménage. My hesitation was due to the fact that historical and alternate universe are not something that I would pick up on my own. But because it was written by K.C. Wells, that and there were CockyBoys on the cover, I knew it would be one that I would have to read.

Where to even begin…Ok so I do love a good ménage, but it needs to be written in a way that all three MCs have equal say in the relationship. No, I don’t mind when two of the three have been together for years prior to adding the third. No, I don’t mind when they all meet at the same time and enter into a threesome because they all agreed to it. What I have issues with is when one of the main players has hesitation to being part of the threesome. I don’t like to see my characters hurt in any way.

Well, let me tell you, K.C. Wells knows how to write a story between three men. I loved the easy acceptance that both sets of parents had toward their children loving the members of the same sex. That right there is a big plus in my book. Yet there were still things that couldn’t be accepted for certain kings. Those things that seem to stand in the way for true happiness for our three MCs.

Oh, I fell in love with Tanish and Feyar from the first few sentences, so much so I thought I would resent Prince Sorren for intruding into their perfect little bubble. Yet when we are introduced to Sorren and we get to know him I realized there was no way I could NOT love him as much as I loved the other two. And by this point you are begging, pleading for the three of them to find a happy ever after.

But there are bumps and heartbreaks that they must go through to get that happy. Things that will leave you wanting to scream, things that will leave you just downright angry, things that will leave you in tears. You feel the pull the three of them have to one another. And it’s a pull that makes you cheer for them. These three are characters that will grab you from the beginning and won’t let you go till the very end.

This is one of the first fantasies that I have read and, like I mentioned before, it is not something I would pick up on my own. That said, while reading this I was transformed into an alternate reality. I was taken to their world, I escaped the here and now, and was enveloped into Sorren, Tanish and Feyar’s world. It totally changed the way I see fantasy books.

Look here is the thing, this book left me feeling content, and happy. It is one that I stayed up late to read, and got up early so I could sneak in a few chapters. One that had me so hooked, I thought about pulling out my phone during church so I could read JUST.A.LITTLE.MORE. It is truly a beautiful story, one that I highly recommend. But I should not be surprised, K.C. Wells is a brilliant story teller who transforms pages into something that takes you to a different place, a place to get lost in, a place where you become a part of these characters lives.

Never wanted this book to end

K.C. Wells is one of my very favorite authors and with each subsequent book she writes, I love her even more. Her characters are wonderful in every way. Although I loved all three MCs in this book, I truly wanted to wrap Sorran up and keep him with me forever. There wasn't anything about this book that I didn't love. I never wanted to leave Teruna and I hope Ms. Wells will give us a chance to visit there again!

The setting is a fantasy world similar to middle earth or the mystical ancient world. Teruna is the center of three kingdoms. Kandor borders Teruna on the west, with mountains that separate Kandor and Teruna, while Vancor is on the east borders of Teruna.

The well written plot features the elements of anguish, jealousy, secrecy and romantic interludes. The kingdom of Kandor is the enemy of Teruna. Rumors of Kandor’s intent to attack Teruna motivate the Teruna king to form an alliance with Vancor. The combined kingdoms of Teruna and Vancor would then be able to defeat Kandor. To accomplish the treaty, the kings decided that their sons should be united in marriage.

The main characters are Prince Tanish of Teruna, Feyar, Tanish’s lover and Prince Sorran of Vancor.

Tanish suffers from guilt because he has loved Feyar for years, but the laws of the kingdom forbid Tanish or anyone from acknowledging Feyar in public. Tanish is forced to keep his love a secret.

As required by Teruna law, Feyar was forcibly enlisted into being a sex tutor for the aristocracy. However Feyar was fortunate enough to be chosen as Tanish’s exclusive bed partner. Feyar regretted the lost of contact with his family, but could not be repentant for the love he shared with Tanish.

Sorran is extremely perceptive; he seeks equality for all the citizens in the realm. When Sorran discovers the love that already exists between Tanish and Feyar, Sorran is heartbroken. Nevertheless, Sorran has a natural magnetism that neither Feyar nor Tanish can resist.

A Bond of Three is an outstanding enjoyable saga. The engaging characters draws the readers into their world by demonstrating the realistic emotional pitfalls Tanish, Feyar and Sorran had to endure before their connection of love was firmly established. The display of compassion in each man is heartwarming; the intimacy scenes are superb.

About the Author

Sir Michael Barber has been chief education advisor at Pearson since September 2011 and is the founder of Delivery Associates.

 

In 2001, he founded the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit in No10, Downing Street, which he ran until 2005. In this role he was responsible for ensuring delivery of the government's domestic policy priorities across health, education, crime reduction, criminal justice, transport and immigration. The sustained focus on delivery from the heart of government, and the processes the PMDU developed, were a significant innovation in government, of interest to numerous other countries and global institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank. Tony Blair described the PMDU as “utterly invaluable.”

 

From 2005 to 2011 he was a partner at McKinsey and Company where he played a leading role in creating a public sector practice and founded the global education practice. In 2009 he founded, in Washington DC, the Education Delivery Institute, a not-for-profit organisation that works with more than a dozen US States to apply systematic delivery approaches to improving outcomes in schools and public higher education.

 

Since 2009, on behalf of the British government, he has visited Pakistan over 30 times to oversee a radical and, so far, successful reform of the Punjab education system. 

 

He is the author of numerous books and articles, such as How to Run a Government published by Penguin in 2015 and Instruction to Deliver (Methuen 2008), which tells the story of his time in Downing Street, and was described by the Financial Times as “one of the best books about British government for many years.” Deliverology 101 is the textbook on how to deliver in government and was written as the curriculum for the Education Delivery Institute.

Andy Moffit is a Senior Practice Expert and a co-founder of McKinsey & Company’s Global Education Practice. Moffit joined the firm in 2000 and has served clients in the financial services, non-profit and public sectors on a wide range of strategic and organizational issues. Since 2005, he has worked exclusively with education clients―large urban districts, state education departments, national foundations and nonprofits, and private companies―on large-scale reform and key strategic efforts. He is a frequent commentator at education sector conferences and publications. Moffit was an elementary school teacher in Houston, Texas from 1991-93 as a corps member of Teach For America. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan, Oxford University and Yale Law School, at which he studied education law and policy. He is based in McKinsey’s Boston office.

Paul Kihn is an Associate Principal in McKinsey and Company's Education Practice, where he specializes in human capital strategy, system transformation, and the delivery of large-scale reform. During his six years at McKinsey, Paul has worked with large urban school districts, local and national non-profits, and state and federal public sector agencies in K-12 and higher education. Prior to joining McKinsey, Paul worked as a public middle school teacher and administrator and community youth worker in South Africa, Ireland and New York City. He is a graduate of Yale College and Columbia University's Teachers College and Graduate School of Business. He lives in Washington, DC.

Codology

A sad testament to 'delusionology'. Barber destroyed the notion of "Public Service" with his crackpot "theories". His blinkered advocacy of a system of managing public services through the heavily rationalist and reductionist approach of imposing allegedly objective performance targets on service delivery continues in this sad tome. Compliance with targeted outcomes is assumed to evidence success and the easy measurement of performance against targets allows effective management and monitoring of that performance. Devilology deserves to be condemned for its actual effects: constraining innovation, creating an obsessive concern with a contrived and ill-conceived series of numbers and measures (to the detriment of actual performance), detracting from good quality service, and even encouraging cheating to meet mandated targets.
Please read "Systems Thinking in the Public Sector" by John Seddon published by Triarchy Press in 2008. Seddon presents a rigorous and belligerent critique of the Barberous ideology which was part of the failed and misguided reform regime of the Blair years which rather than reform public services in fact led to the dismantling and demoralization of Health, Education and Policing in the UK.
Barber's book is a dreadful effort based on self-aggrandization and a desire to carry on pedalling his tawdry wares.

ordering the bureaucracy to attention is like punching a feather pillow--one side caves

Rarely has a more simplistic book been written about such an important topic. Barber is convinced that he has the answer to all that ails government--just create a delivery unit and give it marching orders. This little books stands in sharp contrast with Sir Michael's mind-numbing autobiography--rarely has an autobiography of a short stint in government earned so many pages. It's all a joke for sure--simpler policy and more decentralization appears to be the key. Lord knows that governments have tried every centralizing device known to human kind over the centuries--Chief Financial Officers, Deputy Directors of the Office of Management and Budget, Chief Information Officers, czars of all kinds, etc., etc. It can't come from the top--it has to come from implementable policy with strong capacity. As FDR once argued, ordering the bureaucracy to attention is like punching a feather pillow--one side caves, the other plumps out. Deliverology is just such a book except that the feathers go flying only to be cleaned up by the next administration.

How to get things done in Education

Although this book was specifically written for an audience of American education system leaders it is equally relevant to leaders in education systems worldwide, that is once you get past the Americanisms and the term 'deliverology' itself. If we understand any education system as being made up of the frontline institutions that deliver learning (e.g. schools or colleges), the middle tier (usually a form of regional administration) and central government, then Barber's book models a delivery chain method that joins up all three levels. The three levels are co-dependent and therefore jointly accountable for delivery of improvement policy. Traditionally there has been a disconnect between each level in terms of accountability, with each level being held independently responsible, often with separate audit methods, for its part within policy delivery. The implementation model Barber outlines will work if the policy for reforming an education system is owned by each level of the system, is based on robust and honest self-evaluation of where the system currently is and linked to appropriately challenging targets and trajectories for improvement. To me this is common sense but then the common sense barrier is often the hardest one to overcome in policy development and implementation.

A Wonderful, Wonderful Book!

This story touched on a lot of heavy subjects, such as war, murder, rape (and reactions to it), anorexia, kidnapping, and poverty. However, the story itself was not depressing. The plot centers around Carrie, who has just started college at Stanford, and falls for Jake. Jake is her brother Stephan's roommate. Stephan and Carrie's roommate, Megan, fall for each other. But the story is not a simple romance, Jake feels his secrets should keep him away from Carrie, and Carrie ends up with other boyfriends, and gets engaged. Stephan marries Beth, who doesn't realize her business partner, Jon's adoration of her.
Usually in a story where more than one character's romance is told, I favor one's story more than the others, but this was not the case in this novel, I loved reading all their stories, and it wasn't confusing or hard to keep track of.
A reviewer mentioned that the ending was too storybook, but I really don't agree. This was a romance, so the ending was a happy one for pretty much all the characters. However, the characters weren't riding off into the sunset, they were happy with the ones they love, but there was still the unknowns of Jake's leg, Mark's reaction to Carrie calling off the engagement, Stephen's relationship with Megan's secret, and how Beth and Stephan will handle their new lives.
This was one of the best Katherine Stone books I've read (and I've read all of them), it was a touching, heartwarming story, and I completely recommend it to everyone.

This book had eluded me for years, ever since I first read it (at 13) and after reading it voraciously, lost it. I am not a fan of romance novels, but this book lured me in from the start -what a delicious read! It's one of those books that you'll put down with a satisfied sigh, and a month later, pick it up to begin again. I should know, I read "Roommates" over and over. Now that I've found out who the author is to this book, I am anxious to discover more of her work!

A good ol' traditional romance with plenty of suspense and danger, as well as love, light, and laughter to go around

Originally published in the 80s, Roommates--recently revived and republished--is an enrapturing, gratifying journey that magnificently illustrates the soaring highs and gloomy lows of the college experience, and how it has the sheer power to change lives forever.

The story begins Carrie's freshman year, set at Stanford, and immediately picks up on the lives of her roommates, the phenomenal actress Megan, and the devastating beauty and brains, Beth, as well. Carrie's imminent "flaw"--her tenacious and resilient loving, despite the occasional rejection--sets her up for a world of possibilities in college, as well as a whole new realm of heartbreak. However, Roommates is not just Carrie's story; it's Megan's, it's Beth's, it's her brother, Stephen's, and it's the mysterious and brooding Jake's. Their individual plots all overlap, and the relationships between these five Stanford students, are unmistakably laced together--and forever will be. This makes for a very complicated, very intricate web of a story. I found it a little too soap opera-esque for my taste, but have to admit how well-concocted it is--Katherine Stone is a flawless writer with such a compelling, lyrical voice.

I like how there's a bit of a thriller subplot that doesn't make the book solely about romance; it was refreshing and gripping, although nothing terribly exciting. As with most of Stone's novels, the depiction of love is cloyingly sweet, grandly optimistic, and rather chaste. If you don't like the guaranteed happily-ever-after story line and the inherently perfect cast of characters (seriously... all of them are attractive, nice, smart, generous, brave, etc. etc.), then you may want to stay away from this book. As for me, I do quite enjoy the spice in novels of today's time, but I still enjoyed Roommates's mellow, sentimental tone.

For a glittering narrative that spans not only the young adulthoods of five unforgettable characters, but also their creeping pasts and unpredictable later lives in 1970s America, definitely give Roommates a try.

Pros: Beautiful style // Well-explored, lovable characters // Evocative of the decade and the campus spirit of Stanford // Nice blend of romance, passion, and drama // Connections between characters satisfyingly elaborated upon and probed // Jake's difficult past and his emotional turmoil particularly resonated with me // Juicy plot twist I never saw coming

Cons: Every character (aside from the obvious villain) is good-natured through and through, which I found unusual // A bit too sugary sweet... but that's the appeal! // On the wordy side... not the kind of book you can read in one sitting

Love: "He had told her the truth, every truth, with no omissions. It was a factual recounting, without embellishment, the skeleton without the heart. But to the woman who was listening, and who was hearing his every word with a heart that loved him, the aching details, the ravaged emotions, were there."

Verdict: There's plenty of suspense and danger, as well as love, light, and laughter to go around in the hopelessly romantic--and fabulously nostalgic--Roommates. Days of Our Lives meets a tame, university-level Breakfast Club in an all-American story that flows like magic and is bound to captivate fans of conventional love stories. If you pine for a good ol' traditional romance, then Katherine Stone's 1987 novel--which just happens to be the prolific author's first--is THE book for you.

Rating: 7 out of 10 hearts (4 stars): Not perfect, but overall enjoyable.

Well written, but based upon shaky presuppositions

Brown and Strawn's short book, The Physical Nature of the Christian Life, is a good little volume. I have had the pleasure of hearing Dr Brown speak on similar issues on the past. First, let me state the positives of this book. Part III of the book, which deals with the embodied Christian life and the church was excellent. The authors did a commendable job of examining church life and our embeddedness within the community. I also appreciated the way in which they tied together themes of attachment theory and neuroscience in their observations. It was reminiscent of Curt Thompson's excellent "Anatom of the Soul" in that regard. I found their commitment to growth in community to be such an important thing that is often missing in the modern church. Additionally, their review of the neuroscience literature was was well-written and accessible, even to a non-neuroscientist.

I did have concerns however. I agree with another reviewer (Green) who mentioned that the authors have trouble arriving at their conclusions by asserting that a monistic viewpoint is the only way to get there. I am probably a rarity, but I am neuropsychologist and a dualist, in part because I find the philosophical and biblical arguments more compelling, and relevant here, do not negate the importance of church life. Many of the suggestions that they make do not require a monistic point of view. Furthermore, they seemed to tie together too closely dualism and gnosticism, a leap that I fear they made too blindly.

As an aside, there seemed to be a hint of social constructivism informing their view of church, such that truth is constructed by the group itself, rather than being an objective entity outside of the group. This leans toward postmodernism and I believe is in error. Perhaps that was not the authorial intent, but it did seem in places to come through.

Finally, I wish they would have acknowledged some of the limitations of their own position and provided responses to them. There are compelling arguments from a philosophical perspective in favor of dualism. They failed to deal with the work of people like JP Moreland or Keith Ward. It seems that too often, when people disagree with some aspect of orthodox theology, they revert to the idea that the church fathers were simply too much influenced by the Greeks, Romans, etc. and then go on to say what the biblical authors really meant. I do not think they can make that leap.

On the whole this is a well written, accessible book, but I am afraid their excellent conclusions do not match their weaker presuppositions.

Great Conclusions, but Unconvincing Path to Get There

Brown and Strawn have written some worthwhile details while hanging them on what seems like a fractured frame. The premise begins with the idea that the human person is not primarily located in the mind while having a body as a sort of transport mechanism, but rather the mind is an emergent property of the physical nature of the body. We are not body and soul. We are our bodies, and our minds arise out of the complex dynamics of those bodies. Brown has defended this perspective elsewhere in significant measure and so only uses this as a foundation for a larger focus here. They go on to argue that this physical foundation for the human person has implications for how we ought to live our lives. They argue that being physical beings, we are driven not by that which happens in the soul, but by what happens to the body, particularly in social environments. We are shaped by relationships and social dynamics and also by our capacity for attention and self-reflection.

I really appreciate their treatment of the social and relational dynamics and their explanations of how they affect the human person to bring about both stability and growth. I appreciate their attempts to consider those dynamics not only interpersonally, but also how they play out in churches and small groups. I think they put forth some really valid and significant material on the socially-embedded nature of humanity and growth.

However, I don't think they at all were successful in connecting that social embeddedness to a monistic perspective on human nature. They defended monism fairly well, but it didn't seem to me like there was any reason to do so. It doesn't seem to me that a dualistic perspective on human nature would preclude one from having the exact same social nature.

The last two-thirds of the book has some good material about growth in relationships, but it just seems divorced from the first third. Strawn in particular is focused on the practical implications of monism, but I don't find his train of logic solid. His conclusions are wonderful; I'm just not sure the way he got there was necessary.

Applying Science and Theology

Brown and Strawn have produced an exceptional book in which they explore the physicality of human nature through the neurosciences and psychology. They begin with a thesis that it is not antithetical to Christianity to hold that humans are essentially physical. They claim that the body-soul dualism of much modern Christian thought is not properly Christian.

In fact, they assert that a physicalist view of human nature actually fosters healthier church practices and a more wholistic vision of formation and discipleship. They describe their position as that humans are embodied and socially embedded. This allows them to draw from social psychology in understanding human development and applying this to church practice.

This application is one of the great benefits of this book. The authors are not satisfied with abstract consideration of human nature, but recognize the impact our conceptions have on social interactions and ultimately church formation. This allows for more than just a wholistic view of human persons; it allows for a wholistic view of the church as well.

It is extremely accessible, thought-provoking, and worthwhile.
