About the Author
John Muir was born in Scotland in 1838, and made many expeditions to Alaska and the Sierra Nevadas in California throughout his life. After his adventure with Stickeen in 1880, Muir continued to travel the world and educate people about Yosemite and the natural world. Muir died in 1914.

Fred White is an associate professor of composition and directed the writing program at Santa Clara University from 2003 to 2005. His books include The Well-Crafted Argument (with Simone Billings), Lifewriting, Communicating Technology, Science and the Human Spirit, and The Writer's Art.

About the Author
Najam Haider is Assistant Professor of Religion at Barnard College of Columbia University. His articles have been published in many journals, including Der Islam, the Journal of Near Eastern Studies, and Islamic Law and Society. His research interests include early Islamic history, Islamic law, and the impact of modernity on the contemporary Muslim world. His first book, The Origins of the Shī'a was published by Cambridge University Press in 2011. He is currently working on a new project that focuses on early Islamic historical writing.

Concise, Well-Organized Introduction to Shi'i Islam

I came to this book with only a rudimentary knowledge of Islamic history and a glaring ignorance of Shi'i Islam. This book proved an excellent means of beginning to fill that void. It is academic in its approach and organized into two main sections: 1) an overview of Shi'i theology; and 2) an overview of Shi'i history.

Though there is some mention of Sunni doctrines, a comparison of the two traditions is not a focus of this book. Instead, it focuses on the development of the institution of the Imamate from both a theological and historical perspective within three Shi'i sects: the Zaydis, the Isma'ilis, and the Twelvers. Each section of the book is divided into three subsections so that each sect is discussed separately. This makes the book convenient to digest and thankfully I wasn't overwhelmed with information.

Overall, I found the book very easy to read, and it even bolstered my interest in further learning about Islam. To this end, the suggested reading the author provides at the end of each chapter is extremely helpful. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Shi'i history regardless of your level of knowledge.

"Haider's volume is by no means an introduction to the Shiite tradition in Islam. Rather, it is the author's analysis of features of Shiism that have drawn his attention, emphasizing details that for a reader little acquainted with the sect will likely be difficult to follow and of little interest.....

Thus, while discussing the transformation over time of the Khoja Shiites and their absorption into Niza'ri Isma'ilism, the reader is forced to suffer through rather predictable but, nonetheless, lamentable quotations from leftist sociologist Frantz Fanon and Palestinian apologist Edward Said, culminating in a sharp critique of the movement's current leader, Aga Khan, IV, for what Haider calls his "modernist" ideas and attachment to capitalism.

For the author, the "collective memory" of Shiites, focused on the legitimacy of Muhammad's son-in-law Ali as successor to the Muslim prophet, his assassination in 661 C.E., and the subsequent battle of Karbala, in which Ali's son Hussein was slain, recede into the background. They serve merely as markers to distinguish between the main Shiite traditions: the Twelvers, the Isma'ilis, and the Zaydis. Comparison of the differences in narratives of Karbala among these groups—which focus on a cosmic significance in the martyrdom of Hussein among the Twelvers and Isma'ilis, and a less spiritual protest over the break in Muhammad's lineage for the Zaydis—provides a simple reference for scholars.

For those who have some acquaintance with Shiism, this volume may prove a useful handbook in sorting out differences within the sect. For most newcomers to the subject, it will likely prove confusing and a waste of time."

Paul Coates, University of Hertfordshire, Sam Coleman, University of Hertfordshire

Paul Coates is Professor Emeritus of philosophy at the University of Hertfordshire, where he was head of department. He has served as president of the Mind Association, and has been the recipient of several research awards, most recently from the Arts and Humanities Research Council to lead a major project exploring the nature of Phenomenal Qualities. He is the author of The Metaphysics of Perception, and has published papers on rule-following, perception, and the philosophy of Wilfrid Sellars.

Sam Coleman is Senior Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire. He has published papers in the philosophy of mind and continues to work on matters around consciousness, content and ontology.

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) occurs when the brain cannot process or understand correctly the sounds the ears hear, even though the ears might be functioning properly. It is rarely recognized, often misdiagnosed, and poorly understood, yet the effects can be devastating. Pocket is simultaneously releasing two complementary texts on the subject that are definitely worth some notice. Foli's Like Sound Through Water is a mother's account of her family's struggle with APD in her oldest son, Ben. Her account reads like a novel and is thoroughly engaging while providing a wealth of information. Foli clearly shows the pain misdiagnosis and clinical inaccuracies can cause. While finally obtaining a correct diagnosis brought some relief, Foli shows that the battle for normalcy had only begun. This is mostly a success story with an upbeat ending. The resource section in the back is a bonus. Bellis's When the Brain Can't Hear is the first APD sourcebook written specifically for lay readers. Bellis, the author of an important text on APD for professionals (Assessment and Management of Central Auditory Processing Disorders in the Educational Setting from Science to Practice), herself suffers from APD as the result of a car accident. Her text is naturally more clinical in nature but still quite readable. It covers the many subtypes of APD and their manifestations, diagnosis and testing, treatment options, and coping techniques. The ample glossary adds to the book's accessibility. Either of these texts would be appropriate additions to most collections, but they are best purchased together. The term auditory processing disorder (APD), a 1960s coinage, refers to an affliction of the system running from the ear to the brain that is to be distinguished from problems with hearing, language, and thinking. Because Bellis has suffered from APD after a car accident, she changed the main thrust of her career to avoid specific tasks she was no longer able to perform and still continue in her major field. She gives a clear and informative account of the condition, which has five basic types and manifold variations. APD can complicate socialization and cause sufferers to miss the vocal changes of humor, sarcasm, and other spoken subtleties. Bellis draws on many case histories to underline her points, among them that APD can occur at almost any age and in both sexes. She examines the difficulties of obtaining the accurate diagnosis vital for effective treatment; reports on the wide variety of therapies needed for APD; explains how to adjust at school, work, and home; and concludes with a thorough glossary. About the Author
Teri James Bellis, Ph.D., is a professor of audiology at the University of South Dakota and the author of the authoritative text for professionals on the diagnosis and treatment of APD: Assessment and Management of Central Auditory Processing Disorders in the Educational Setting: From Science to Practice. Dr. Bellis has spent more than fifteen years in the field of auditory neuroscience and is America's leading speaker on APD, lecturing around the world to professionals and sufferers alike. Ironically, she herself became the victim of adult-onset APD as the result of head trauma suffered in a car accident. Her writing has been featured in numerous medical and academic publications, including the prestigious Journal of Neuroscience. She lives in South Dakota.

Teri Bellis' new book is fantastic... A must-read for anyone whose life is touched by auditory processing disorder (family, teachers, medical professionals, etc). I bought it for myself and sent it to friends and family. I'm planning on passing it along to our pediatrician and our ENT, as well, since their awareness of this disorder could have saved us years of searching for answers! Maybe our knowledge can help someone else.
_When the Brain Can't Hear_ is a well-written and easily read explanation of what APD is, what it isn't, and what it might be. This makes sense as APD identification often requires a good deal of detective work, particularly when the 'patient' is a child. Dr. Bellis takes a conservative approach to APD identification, frequently reminding the reader not to make assumptions without appropriate data... but she doesn't just say "hey, maybe you have it and maybe you don't." She gives you other options to consider, too, so you're not left hanging if APD isn't the answer to your questions.
In reading this book, I learned a great deal about how APD manifests, what causes (what might cause) the different manifestations, and ways to address these areas. The only area I had trouble with was treatment specific to subtype. Dr. Bellis uses a system to categorize types of APD that seemed a bit too cut and dry for me. I had some difficulty identifying my daughter's subtype (her evaluation was done by someone who doesn't use the same system of classification) and therefore figuring out which treatment methods Dr. Bellis felt would best remediate her specific symptoms. Overall, however, the book gave me plenty to consider both in terms of understanding the disorder and better understanding the many treatment options.
I highly recommend this book. If you only read one book on APD, this is the one you should read.

BEST BOOK ON AUDITORY PROCESSING FOR PARENTS

I love this book as even the title has been very helpful in explaining the unique challenges that face my son to family and teachers.

Information about Auditory Processing Disorder is not wisely available. What is out there is brief, repetitive and minimal. I find lot of textbooks at a cost $100+/- but this is the only lay person book I have found that does the subject juctice.

Even Speech Lanuage Therapist do not have a good undertanding of this disorder unless they specialize in it. We wasted 9 months with a SPT-CCC who thought she know how to treat it - but really didn't. She just used a mixture of Language Processing techniques with poor results.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. I have read it several times and keep learning from it.

If you looking for information about Auditory Processing Disorder - someone you love must be suffering from it and for that I am so very sorry. As a mother of a son with it life is challeging for our whole family, but especially him. Finally, realizing what was "wrong" has helped a lot. I am relieved that he isn't incorrigible, but that there is a medical explaination.
