Compulsively readable

I find this book unputdownable, even though it fills me at times with despair, disgust and irritation. Kenneth Williams was a British actor and comedian of the 50s, 60s and 70s with an acute intelligence and a unique gift for comedy. He was gay, and for many years of his working life homosexuality was illegal. His comic persona used the "camp" stereotype and private language in a way that was far funnier than others in the same (small) field, or anyone since (Julian Clary, Graham Norton). He was widely read, inventive and gifted at ad libbing and eventually earned a living on chat shows and panel games. He had many friends in the theatre who obviously enjoyed his company. He was an excellent writer, one of the things that makes this diary worth reading. His writing is often as funny and perceptive as you'd expect from his public persona, revealing the surreal in the ordinary. But the diary also reveals a man with a dark side, someone who never found a way of living that made him happy. You long to say "Kenneth! Get some therapy!" His self analysis too often turns into navel gazing. He was tortured by guilt over his sexual feelings, constantly making contradictory statements and apparently trying to persuade himself he was above all that. He could also behave appallingly to people -- all faithfully recorded. He clearly came home and wrote the diary, justifying what he'd done. He certainly brooded over wrongs, but he often records apologising and making up. He has flashes of self-insight - that he really only feels at home among people outside his theatrical set. He really was extremely talented - and bigheaded with it. He must have been a nightmare to have in a cast, constantly thinking he knew better and trying to take over. Particularly in the early entries, he sometimes waffles on pretentiously, using long words you feel he doesn't quite understand, and giving an imitation of someone being profound. Then he'll follow the pomposity with a hilarious bit of observation written in a direct and slangy way. As a warts and all portrait, this is unequalled. And incidentally gives a fascinating insight into the stage/screen/radio/TV of the period. Sadly, he took his own life.

A Terrific Textbook

Ekelund-Hebert has long been recognized to be the finest undergraduate history-of-economic-thought textbook on the market. This recognition is very well-deserved. The book's coverage is full, the writing clear, and the economics first-rate.

Excellent text

Four stars, because it isn't perfect; it's an excellent text, though. I've taught HET at the undergrad & grad level, in 4 countries, and E&H is by far the best undergrad text. They do a very nice job of tracing the development of economic thinking from the ancient Greeks to present. Their treatments of various theories tend *not* to be simplistic, yet are presented quite clearly; one can learn a fair amount of economics from this book.

They also are extremely fair in treating conflicting theories and schools of thought, perhaps too much so at times, but such fairness is extremely important when doing a historical treatment like this -- ideas need to be evaluated on their own terms, and in context, not simply evaluated purely from what we know now.

I could list many quibbles: almost no mention of Frank Knight, they misunderstand the importance and scope of the Methodenstreit (e.g. Pareto was heavily involved, it wasn't just Menger's personal feud with Schmoller), they ignore important ideas from the ancient Romans, nothing at all on ancient Chinese, Hebrews, Hindus, too little on Islam, and...

And these are all small points. It's a well written undergrad text: thorough, authoritative, written with a very enthusiastic tone, quite readable, includes an enormous number of suggestions for additional reading. If you want deep & detailed theoretical discussion, Blaug's "Economic Theory in Retrospect" is better. If you want pure entertainment, Skousen's book is better (can't recall the name). If you want a very good account of the development of economics, Ekelund & Hebert is your best choice.

The consummate textbook on the History of Economic Theory. Ekelund and Hebert present a thorough examination of said history from the time of Plato to today, and present it in such a way that the material is easily read and understood.
This is the book I will be using when I teach History of Thought.

Awesome for the hardcore Arts & Crafts Woodworker

If you are a woodworker even remotely interested in the Arts & Crafts movement (Stickley, Greene & Greene, etc.) then you know Darrell is at the top of this craft. As a professional woodworker, teacher and author he demonstrates extremely high quality designs and details that exemplify this style. I'm honestly blown away by the level of detail in this book. I bought it on pre-order without knowing what to expect. And while Darrell doesn't go into great detail on some of the more simple and common elements of G&G furniture (through tennon, cloud lift, etc), these are covered in other books (including his) and resources and you'll already have experience with them if you're tackling the details in this book. He does include a section on making square ebony plugs, though.

"In the Greene & Greene Style: Projects and Details for the Woodworker" goes further into the how-to of some of Darrell's outstanding (and a couple unique/adapted) design elements by not only giving a description and photos , but actually dimensional drawings of the details, jigs to fabricate them, and step-by-step process of doing so. It's clear Darrell has learned from a lot of trial-and-error and is trying to get us up the learning curve faster so we can continue this beautiful style of furniture. Looking at photos of a finished piece, I wouldn't have expected this incredible detail was warranted but after reading it I think every one of the G&G details is presented with a necessary level of information to be duplicated by an interested woodworker.

Peart is a Master

I have both of Darrell Peart's books now...I think he has only two. Anyhow, this book is a perfect sequel to his first which was a masterpiece in Greene & Greene craftsmanship. First, I must say that I LOVE and have built many G&G pieced of furniture. I am an amateur woodworker and have built the furniture only for my family (6 children and 16 grandchildren). Actually, I have become quite good at the art. However, Peart's first book and now this one have opened my eyes to techniques and methods that have made my work MUCH MORE professional and, in some cases, saved time. Both books are very well illustrated and written. They are very nice "how to" books but also provide some of the history and development of the G&G style. If you like or produce Arts & Crafts furniture, you will LOVE both of Peart's books.

I highly recommend the book to any furniture maker thinking of exploring ...

This is the second book I've purchased written by Darrell about Greene and Greene furniture construction. Both of Darrell's books were an invaluable resource for me as I designed and built an entertainment center in the Greene and Greene style. This book does a deeper dive into some of Darrell's techniques for embellishing your furniture. His writing style is concise, and he shares his many years of experience in this style. I highly recommend the book to any furniture maker thinking of exploring the Greene and Greene style. My only regret is that I purchased an electronic copy for my Kindle. That was a mistake because there are some books that really don't work well in the electronic format. Buy a printed copy.

A comprehensive and understandable work on hydraulics...

As a lecturer and graduate student in water resource engineering, I have read numberous textbooks covering the topic of fluid mechanics. I have reviewed textbooks written by aeronautical and mechanical engineers, and find that the civil engineers, particularly Dr.'s Finnemore and Franzini, have done an exemplary job in writing a book that is clear and logical, yet spares no detail, in presenting the fundamentals of fluids to undergraduates and graduates alike. The book begins with definitions, viscocity, and hydrostatics, then moves along to open-channel hydraulics and waterhammer.
The authors discuss the details in terms of concepts, testing, and mathematical computations while using a minimum of complicated vector integrals. They continue to present "the big picture" of hydraulics even while explaining fluid theory - a student and lecturer could not ask for more. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that I laud this textbook and recommend it to any practicing civil or agricultural engineer, or to any student of engineering.

Best hydraulic reference I have found & I use it regularly

I own the 8th edition and have used it regulary since graduation 12 years ago as a practicing civil engineer designing water treatment plants. I have looked at many other fluid mechanics books over the years and have not found any equal to this one. I need to get the 10th edition and see how it has changed with Daugherty no longer around. There are other books that are more in-depth with theoretical analysis, but this one has the best balance betweeen theory and practical application for typical civil engineering projects.

Okay but not exceptional

Most of the material covered is fairly basic with an emphasis on fluid statics of course (constant velocity flow). I was disappointed to see apparent absence of higher level mathematics. I understand that many of the real problems in fluid dynamics/CFD are approximations of the underlying equations (Navier-Stokes, etc.). However I would like to have seen some of the simpler models of turbulent flow at the very least. The homework problems are very easy.

In the 1980s this claim is completely unjustified. Research on mnemonics and imagery has grown in exciting ways. Researchers are tapping the area's theoretical potential, both in terms of extending basic memory theories to account for the robust effects produced by mnemonic techniques and in terms of using explanations of mnemonic effects to understand basic memory processes. Individual differences in the use of imagery and mnemonic encoding activities are also being explored. This research has provided valuable information for basic memory theories (e. g.

As a recipient of Mr. Ellis' "Orbital Operations" emails, I looked forward to this book, as my favorite parts of his email dispatches are the bits and blurbs from his various talks, and his musings on technology and the future and whatnot. This book did not disappoint. I read it in a day, and my only issue was that it wasn't twice as long.

Warren Ellis is the Raving Maniac of the Internet who, of course makes the most sense. The man reads what you read, then he thinks about it before vomiting forth an opinion. Or at least that's what it seems like in these talks. Buy this book. Give Warren more time to think.

Warren Ellis' gives us his take on why the futurists' penchant for prediction is utter bulls***. He argues for an organic future that really cannot be predicted as seen time and time again. This book contains short snippets of his thoughts and speeches (at times repetitive but adds to pugnacity of the argument) at various sci-fi and tech conventions/conferences. I would recommend this to people familiar with Mr. Ellis! If not, tread wearily!
