About the Author

Mark P. Silverman is Professor of Physics at Trinity College. He has held the Joliot Chair of Physics at the Ecole Supérieure de Physique et Chimie Industrielles in Paris, was Erskine Professor at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, and Chief Researcher at the Hitachi Advanced Research Laboratory (then) near Tokyo. Besides numerous articles on physics, Dr. Silverman has written of his educational experiments in "self-directed learning". For relaxation, he enjoys playing the flute and hiking in the mountains.

M0 Core: Good Read; Applications: Primarily for RealView IDE

The author has written on the Cortex M0 and Cortex M3 in two books (which I own and have read). Both books are good descriptions of the core of the respective architectures. Much of the information is clearly from the ARM technical documentation. Both books are helpful in condensing the ARM technical documentation for readers new to ARM (e.g. migrating from the PIC), or for less experienced users. Later, when such a reader is more experienced with the Cortex M0/M3 architecture they will be better prepared to get more out of the full ARM technical documentation. Be aware that although there is a chapter on assembly language programming and some C examples, this book is not project oriented and does not focus on any specific vendor's Cortex M0 implementation. It is about the Cortex M0 core architecture.

The author worked for ARM for 10 years (state on the back cover). That explains why the majority of the book is written from the vantage point of the ARM RealView tool set. That said, as a user of the GNU tool chain, I found this book to be mildly useful in that respect. There are a few (but far between) mentions of GNU in this book; the vast majority of this text assumes use of the ARM RealView IDE. Although I am experience enough with ARM to port CMSIS code from one vendor architecture to another a reader unfamiliar enough with ARM may find this book frustrating especially if they do not have ARM/RealView (there is a limited demo version).

With respect to the book's content, independent from the tool set, the text is almost exclusively focused on the Cortex M0 core. That is, to understand the various vendor peripherals you need to have a specific vendors' datasheet (or User Manual in the case of NXP) to get the full story on how to use a specific Cortex M0 product. There are some interesting sections (basic architecture, memory, interrupts, and portions of applications examples) that I found useful reading other sections are best read later (power, OS Support, RTOS, and assembly language programming).

So, I understand why the author wrote the book the way he did and steered clear of vendor specific implementations. The book is intended to educate one on the Cortex M0 CORE and not the peripherals. He needed an IDE to illustrate some key concepts. That is why I rated the book only at 4 stars. My expectation were a book with more general information that can be used to understand the used of one or more Cortex M0 vendor implementations and not spend thousands on and IDE. Indeed if you exclude RealView and IAR (Too pricy for the budget conscious) you need to have a very good understanding of Eclipse/CDT to port many Cortex M0 boards to the various IDE's. This is particularly true for the Olimex low-cost boards. For example NXP and CodeRed are tightly coupled and can be difficult for the beginner for non-NXP/CodeRed produced boards. Case in point, the Olimex LPC1114 Cortex M0 board is a wonderful low-cost board ideal for the beginner. However Olimex supplied examples are written for the IAR IDE (go figure). I found, so far, that only Rowley's Crossworks IDE works out-of-the-box with Olimex's boards and for $100 one can obtain a full personal use license for Crossworks. I contacted IAR and ARM and was told they do not have such a low-cost license.

I believe that Newness Press would better serve their audience if they offered a second version of this book. That would be, for example, a Cortex M0 book for the GNU tool chain and Eclipse/IDE. By adding example project for specific low-cost boards and IDE's (I'd choose Crossworks and Olimex) such an edition would be deserving of all 5 stars.

Wonderful book!

In this book I found many missing pieces of what I needed to start development on ARM. They are usually not mentioned in device data-sheets which assume at least some knowledge of the subject. Due to this book I was able to complete my first ARM project. It is very clearly written and in contrast with other similar books, it does not reduce to rewriting the data-sheets. I like in particular a very through section on how to design low-power applications. Even if the discussion in this section is based on NXP devices, the entire approach can be easily adjusted to other families. That is what I did for Freescale Kinetis. If you are new to ARM and target to Cortex-M0/M0+, I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Nicola Mandorino was born in Taranto, Italy in 1963. He started studying the piano at the age of 14 and also began teaching himself the guitar. After a short period of study with the classical guitar, he discovered that the playing style used with this instrument had a close relationship to that method of playing used in jazz and fingerpicking. He expanded his knowledge by listening to and studying the recordings of the most well known guitarists and by attending numerous courses and master classes. In 1986 he started a long concert career as a guitarist of many jazz styles. He worked intently at improving the technique of fingerstyle jazz and continued the study of advanced technical fingerpicking. With the wealth of experience and knowledge accumulated over the years, in 1992 he began working as an instructor teaching modern jazz guitar, blues and fingerpicking. He also taught many basic courses for those of entry skill level. He gradually abandoned the traditional methods of teaching and began to develop his own methods that were more modern and closer to the real interests of his students. These methods are proving to be very effective and hundreds of students over the years have enrolled in his courses. His teaching methods make learning to play the guitar fun and help students develop a passion for their instrument. Currently, he is a teacher of modern guitar at the Music Learning Centre and at several Italian musical associations in the province of Taranto, Italy. His courses help his students maintain a high level of interest and participation. Simultaneously, he continues to play concerts for the public by offering a repertoire of songs consisting of fingerpicking, jazz, country, bluegrass and Irish folk.

What can I say, I like this guys work

When I decided to take up the guitar at the tender age of 37, I lucked across GuitarNick.com (the website of the author). Fifteen minutes later I understood how to read guitar Tabs (tablature). Six months later here I am receiving this book for Christmas. I have only briefly looked through this book, but I can already tell that this is exactly what I was hoping it would be. If you are new to guitar and don't necessarily want to "just" learn chords, or power chords, go to the author's site, if you like what you see, and where his method is going, buy this book! The five stars is not only part of the anticipation of learning from this book, but from GuitarNick.com. (I swear I don't know the guy, but I have been raving about his site to anyone who will listen). It really is that good, and his lessons are extremely straightforward and entertaining.

Love this book!!

Excellent book!! i have dedicatedly been following the lessons for the past month, and try to give it 2 hours a day, and can feel and hear the difference, i put the book on a stand, and go through the lesson tab and corresponding video, try to get the finger movement going, then use a metronome start at 90 bpm and then 110 and then finally 120, if i can play it at 120, i move on to the next set of lessons.

Beware - no chords listed

I really want to love this book, but I can't! The book has songs, but no chords associated. I don't know why, they are above the TAB in the online version which is slightly different. Not having chords makes the songs useless without taking time to figure them out and note them yourself. The book needs to be re-written and old editions recalled.

Lesson learned....never assume

It's not so much the product itself that I have a problem with. It is more the fact that because this was presented as a 9 book set pack from a "collection" it led me to believe I would be receiving the first 9 books of the series or at least 9 books in chronological order, not the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, then the 8th and 9th, then the 12th, then the 17th and 18th, and lastly the 20th. Now I'm stuck trying to buy separately all the ones that fall in between those.

Lacan is heavy stuff

Jacques Lacan is one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. However, his work has largely been unavailable to the English-speaking world, until this version of his work came out. Bruce Fink does a fantastic job with the translations and the background information, but that does not make Lacan any less dense.

If you're looking for an introduction to Lacan, check out Slavoj Zizek's works. They're much more readable and easy to understand. For those of stouter constitution though, pick up Fink's translation of Lacan's Ecrits and fasten your seatbelt.

While Lacan is in and of himself very difficult, this is a lovely complilation. Everything you need to atleast attempt to understand Lacan. Best of Luck, it's very much worth it!
