Linda Holbeche is Research and Policy Director at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). Linda is responsible for leading the CIPD's extensive management research programme and the translation of that knowledge into practice for the benefit of all those involved in the management and development of people. She heads a 40 strong team, including 12 expert research advisers, and is a key spokesperson and advocate for the people management and development profession, in the media and in relations with government and other opinion formers. Linda was previously with the Work Foundation where she was Director of Leadership and Consultancy and prior to this she was Director of Research and Strategy at Roffey Park Institute for 12 years.

About the Author
Edward L. Wolf is Professor of Physics at the Polytechnic University in New York City. His long-term teaching experience ranges from undergraduate courses to the direction of thesis research. His research activities cover solid state physics, scanning tunneling microscopy, electron tunneling spectroscopy and superconductivity. Edward Wolf holds industrial and academic appointments. The former Director of the National Science Foundation is Fellow of the American Physical Society. He has authored over 100 refereed publications as well as a monograph on the principles of Electron Tunneling Spectroscopy. The second edition of his successful textbook 'Nanophysics and Nanotechnology' has been published recently.
In 2007, Professor Wolf was honored with the "Jacobs Excellence in Education Award" by the Polytechnical University of New York.

You need more than just the Prerequisites

Although the author of this book (also the professor of the class I took this for) claim that all you need to understand this material is Mechanics and E&M as a prerequisite, that is not the case at all. The book discusses advanced topics right off the bat in theoretical physics and would really only benefit someone that has taken courses in Quantum Physics and Solid State Physics, which I did not. It's not at all engaging and put me to sleep throughout the semester. The equations are just thrown at the reader with no examples on how to properly use them (like most physics and calculus books normally have). It dives right into cutting edge technology without starting with the basic physics that led up to the breakthrough. It is a book for physics majors, not engineering majors. I was really disappointed with it and if I could do it over, I would never have taken the course either.

Drawing on these concrete examples, the third part proposes some generic outlines for synthesis. Zalamea's book serves as a conceptual introduction to mathematical themes rarely discussed outside specialist circles, and as a critical lens by means of which today's mathematics may aid us in the configuration of new cultural perspectives. If analytic philosophy was forged in the fires of set theory and classical logic at the beginning of the twentieth century, then today, at the dawn of the twenty-first, and around the scaffolding of category theory and the logic of sheaves, it is time for a complementary, synthetic philosophy to be built.

Fantastic exploration of contemporary math

Great book, completely interesting. Most of the math was over my head, but the clarity and correctness he brought to the parts that i did understand made me believe the rest. He's a good writer and doesn't waste time or fluff up his vocabulary unnecessarily. Really, really made me want to learn some new math. Also, a very attractive, well-designed and well-edited volume. Two thumsb up. His basic thesis is that until now philosophy (particularly analytic philosophy) has treated mathematical logic and ZFC set theory as the universe of all possible maths, which is crazily parochial and doesn't even bite the tip of the iceberg of contemporary math. Zamalea does a great job using words to describe the ways in which contemporary mathematics is simply incommensurable with early-20th-century math, and just can't be meaningfully reduced to it. Totally new things start happening when you start hitting the level of connectedness and complexity that is the starting point for doing contemporary math. The book is a call for philosophers to shut up, put down the frege and the quine (but maybe not cohen), and pick up grothendieck, serre, connes, zilber, etc.

Anyway, great book.
