Balanced insight

"Microcognition" is a wonderful book for anyone wanting to understand and cogitate the most heated issues in AI today. The book is written in 1989, so the most prominent issue is that of connectionism versus classical AI. The book gives very good introduction to both paradigms and provides the rader with lots of background material. The book is basically divided into 2 sections, 1) The Mind's-Eye View and 2) The Brain's-Eye View. The discussion is balanced and insightful, and Clark is a wonderful writer. His conclusion in short is that AI research must continue in both the "Mind's-Eye View" (classical AI) strand and the "Brain's-Eye View" (connectionism) strand for the paradigms have different aims.

About the Author
John F. Savage is Professor Emeritus at the Lynch School of Education at Boston College, where he was Coordinator of the Graduate Reading/Literacy program for 33 years. He began his career as a classroom teacher when Dick and Jane dominated the reading scene. He taught reading with a phonics/linguistic approach and was an active participant as whole language gained popularity in classroom programs. He has witnessed the ebb and flow of phonics in schools for over 40 years, and he still maintains an active role in classrooms with teachers and children. Dr. Savage’s professional writing includes five college texts in reading and language arts, including Teaching Reading and Writing: Combining Skills, Strategies, and Literature (McGraw-Hill, 1998) and For the Love of Literature: Children and Books in the Elementary Years (McGraw-Hill, 2000). He has also written scores of professional journal articles, a children’s trade book on dyslexia, and other material that ranges from magazine articles to basal stories. Most recently, he has written a comprehensive primary grade phonics program, Phonics Plus (Educators Publishing Service, 2006). A popular speaker, John Savage has conducted workshops on reading instruction all over the Unites States, in Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia, where he was a Senior Fulbright Scholar.

Great Resource

In my undergrad program, this was the textbook that was used to build our foundation of the various phonics elements. This is a gem of a book. Since then, I have purchased other phonics books written by many other 'experts' in the field and I have come to one conclusion. This is the best one out there. The other phonics books gives you the authors teaching strategies and what works for them. Well, as you all know... what works for one teacher and their class doesn't work for you and your class. I still refer back to this book to cement my knowledge of the multitude of phonics elements and how to teach them. I highly recommend this book to novice teachers and new teachers. I used it a lot when I was a Title I teacher in a school district. This is a great resource I plan on keeping for the rest of my teaching career. Great job Mr. Savage!

incomprehensible.

I found the sentence structure to be so convoluted as to be almost incomprehensible. Some sentences didn't make any sense at all. The extensive use of passive tense didn't help. It was far too generalized and abstract in its description of early diplomatic history.
The picture on the front is priceless: "The reception of the Diplomatique (Macartney) and his suite, at the Court of Pekin". Published in September 1792, by famous caricaturist James Gillray.
I strongly recommend "The Practice of Diplomacy, Its Evolution, theory and administration" by Kieth Hamilton and Rochasrd Langhorne. It's far easier reading, far more thorough in its coverage of the subject, has more information and is better organized.

One damn embassy after another

Diplomatic practice - "the conduct of business between states by peaceful means", in Sir Ernest Satow's guide, published in 1917 - clearly refers to the means through which substance of the relations between states - diplomacy - is carried out. Diplomatic practice is a narrow field with a short sell-by date. After all, who cares about the how, after so many centuries? What one is interested in, is the "what it was all about", and how the practitioners, the diplomats, succeeded, or failed, in achieving the country's policy aims.

The title of the book is thus confusing, for it implies substance, when its subject, as stated on page 12, is the "privileged aspect of general systems of information-gathering, of representation, and of negotiation" - whatever this may mean. If in doubt, throw in the term "system" - it sounds scholarly.

Having thus stated his aim, the author sets out to refute: "Whiggish ideas of improvability and improvement" in "bureaucratic processes, notably systematization" (pg. 43). He does so by deploying a "standard chronological pattern" - and to do so he divides up the book into seven chapters. The early ones each cover 150-200 years of diplomatic practice, the last just 70 years. There is a "Conclusion: the future" section, which is just tidbits of contemporary practice thrown in for good measure.

Chronology is a lazy man's way to write history, and it leaves to the reader the task of organizing the facts as they dribble out of the time-line - drip, drop, drip. When moreover, the author jumps haphazardly from one country to the other, confusion is soon followed by boredom, and then despondency.

Eminently forgettable.

The commentaries provided were too dry for my taste. This book was a mandatory reference for my Psalms class, and had we been given a chance I would've gone with another reading material. Nothing wrong with the book in general, it was a little dry for my taste.

An interesting storyline

A good story line but several of the chapters/plot line could have been fleshed out a bit more. I would have also liked a bit more information about the different totems as well. Also, some of the transitions are rough and it feels as if its of information are left out. The editing and overall writing quality are better in this book than the first. Both this one and the previous book ended on a decent cliffhanger, I'm looking forward to the next installment.

First time I read the book I felt there were parts missing but still was a nice continuation of the first book. Now that the upload error has been fixed and the complete version is up the story makes so much better sense. I had to read the entire book again because the parts that were left off in error are all over the book. Reading with the error fixed the story is so much more fleshed out. Looking forward to reading the next one.

Pave Low. The term itself generates an image: a dark, wispy night; a low, pulsating rumble approaching from the distance. Heavily armed, they quickly set up to collect intelligence, kill enemy troops, rescue downed or isolated friendly personnel, or otherwise conduct a direct action mission. Mission complete, they just as quickly reassemble, reboard the aircraft, and then disappear into the consuming darkness. It is a powerful image—a conjure, if you will—that strikes fear into any enemy of the United States. But the conjure is real. It is a helicopter called the MH-53J/M. That machine is the end result of the evolution of state-of-the-art avionics, communication, and navigation equipment crewed by highly motivated, enthusiastic, and smart young operators well steeped in the principles, heritage, and credo of special operations. It is the classic combination of men and machine. Those aircraft and Airmen were assigned to the US Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), “America’s specialized airpower . . . a step ahead in a changing world, delivering special operations power anytime, anywhere.”1 AFSOC controls a mixed fleet of both rotaryand fixed-wing aircraft to facilitate the fulfillment of that mission. However, the single aircraft that, in its day, has best epitomized that role is the Pave Low helicopter. It, perhaps more than any other aircraft, allowed the AFSOC to realize its purpose. But it was not always so. The aircraft themselves were revolutionary combinations of new, more powerful turbine engines with rotarywing aircraft to produce vastly increased lifting power. Conceptualized, built, and designated for simpler missions, they were immediately swept up into the long war in Southeast Asia. There they proved the efficacy of the aircraft for dangerous rescue missions, for the initiation of a whole new generation of developing avionics and navigation technology, for providing challenging direct support to small special forces teams and indigenous forces inserted behind enemy lines, and for a myriad of other things that heavy-lift helicopters could be assigned to do. In accomplishing all of that, they also trained a whole generation of men who learned of combat along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos and at other places like Quang Tri, South Vietnam; Son Tay, North Vietnam; and Koh Tang Island, Cambodia. After that conflict, those aircraft and men were returned to peacetime locations and duties, and much was forgotten of those dangerous times and missions. However, a cadre of dedicated combat aviators and commanders felt that the aircraft and community of Airmen had much more to give. Foreseeing an ever-dangerous world, they harnessed those aircraft to a series of evolving new technologies that vastly improved the aircraft by giving them the ability to traverse airspace in any weather conditions, day and night, and to avoid enemy threats. That concept was validated in operations in Panama, Kuwait, Iraq, Serbia, Afghanistan, and many more smaller and quieter operations in between. The men and aircraft also showed the larger utilitarian value of the aircraft as, over the years, they were called out many times to provide natural disaster and humanitarian relief from Africa to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Something missing

I bought this book because I worked on these helicopters in the Air Force during the 1980's. I guess I wanted to revisit history a little. Unfortunately, this book was something of a disappointment. The text of the book seems accurate and quite long and detailed, however, there are a few things missing. I suspect the publisher shipped these books before they proofed them. There is no copy write page. The table of contents lists dozens of figures and photos. There are only 5 photos in the entire book, but there are dozens of empty spaces where the figures and photos would presumably go. There are also no page numbers in the entire book, but the page numbers are used in the table of contents. There is also nothing printed on the spine or on the back cover. I will try to return this copy and perhaps get one that is actually complete as I would very much like to view the book in its entirety. Maybe then I can give it a better review.
Update: I returned the book and within 3 days received a replacement. Unfortunately, the replacement is identical to the first one. No page numbers, most photos missing & no copy write page. Apparently, Amazon doesn't read the reason you returned an item before they ship you a new one. I will return this one for a refund. Don't buy this book.
