Wonderful Historical Roamance

After her father dies and her brother abandons them, Anne must find a way to take care of herself and her sisters. She becomes the companion of Lady Danford and when making a wish on the Fairy steps, she never dreams it might actually come true. This is a wonderful historical romance. Entertaining characters, plenty of drama and a bit emotional with a sweet romance. I enjoyed it.

Strong Debut!

Eileen Richards has made a strong debut with her novel An Unexpected Wish. Lovers of more traditional styled Regencies will be pleased with this well written and thoughtful story. Sweetness presided overall in this book with the kindness and responsible behavior of the hero and heroine. There was also just the right amount of intense passionate moments to show their attraction. As an added bonus Ms. Richards displays her Jane Austen influence with various allusions to that author's work, Persuasion in particular. While supposed magical spells play a part in this book's plot the real magic is in Ms. Richards writing.

Loved it!

I loved this book! Anne put her family first and struggled with self doubt and feelings of inferiority. I loved her strength as she tried to protect her sisters from the harsh realities of their lives and keep a roof over their heads. Nathaniel's world was turned upside down by Anne, yet he took it in stride. Even before he admitted what was in his heart, he knew there was something between them. Together, they overcame adversity and foolish beliefs. I will be waiting for the next book in this series as I came to care for the characters.

Three Mysteries, One Story? No, Three Stories, One Mystery

It seems a device that is not quite necessary- making three stories out of one killing by telling the story from three vantage points. Yet I am an Ellory fan, so I guess I must leave him to his devices and go along for the ride. In creating the three stories, he does leave us with a bit of mystery, that being whether the right man was executed for the crime. There again I am not so fond of doing so as I like my mysteries neatly tied up. But again, if they all were, then we wouldn't leave as much room for variety in the genre. So all three stories were well-written, enjoyable as much as a murder mystery can be, and each story left me wanting to read the other two. That's a pretty good recommendation in my book. But, my review of each story is going to be the same!

Ellory is Magic

A stunning first person portrayal of a murder from the eyes of the lead detective. You not only get the story, but you get the thought process and the emotional appeal. "The Cop" is the second in three novellas telling the same story from three different points of view. It's very courageous of R.J. Ellory to try this and a huge success.
If you have never read Ellory, you are doing yourself an injustice as a reader. This novella trilogy is a great place to start.

Contemporary artist and children's book author Ringgold (Tar Beach) chronicles her efforts as a black woman, born in 1930s Harlem, in fighting sexism and racism to make her mark in the world. Her socially conscious paintings (The Flag Is Bleeding, 1967; Die, 1967), story quilts (Who's Afraid of Aunt Jemima? 1983) and various sculptures, dolls, masks and live performances have all received favorable review attention. The artist has also enjoyed a long and varied teaching career. Unfortunately, this portrait is filled with contradictions that often undermine Ringgold's sincerity and prevent her from establishing an emotional bond with the reader. Though she lists her activist stance in support of rights and opportunities for African Americans and, more broadly, for all women, her narratives fail to convey the passion of her described convictions. Ringgold stresses the importance of "family" and "values," but her unconventional marriage, living and child-rearing arrangements do not reflect her good intentions. The end result reads like the sanitized diary of a self-absorbed woman.

This lively and delightfully written autobiography is set against a background of cultural and political upheaval. Ringgold's struggle to establish herself as a black artist and her need to define the meaning of a "woman's art" are the major themes found throughout this book?indeed, in all her projects. A talented painter, she is also known for her work in soft sculpture, textiles, masks, performance art, and writing children's books. Ringgold is represented in many public and private collections, ranging from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and Chicago's Harold Washington Library Center to Brooklyn's Crown Heights Public School 22. This book is well illustrated with family photos as well as examples of the artist's enormous output. Ringgold writes with candor and warmth about her struggle and her "dreams coming true" as an African American, a woman, and an artist, from her childhood in Harlem in the 1930s through her political awakening in the 1960s to her current success "making art, making waves, making money." Racism is always there, even now--in the art world and in the fancy suburb where she lives--but so are friends, family, and celebration. She's frank about her difficulties with her daughters, about her conflicts as a feminist in the black community, about the white male art establishment that tried to dismiss her work as "protest" art. Small family snapshots are on every page, and there's a 30-page insert with color reproductions of her art, including her amazing story quilts, such as "Tar Beach," which led to her Caldecott Honor Book and a career in children's literature. a must read biography of one of the most important artists of the country. A book about a Black Woman Fine Artist telling her story is a rare find and unsurprisingly interesting, poignant, insightful, triumphant.

Especially recommended for aspiring artists

Faith Ringgold began her artistic career in the 1960's as a painter, but is best known for her painted story quilts and her children's books such as the award-winning TAR BEACH. Her memoirs, first published in 1995 and reprinted in this 10th Anniversary Edition, were actually begun in the late 1970's after she returned from a trip to West Africa, a time when she herself was still very much a "work in progress" personally and professionally. Then again, Faith Ringgold will always be evolving; this is not a woman content to rest on her many laurels.

A memoir is revealing on two levels: since it's selective remembering, what the author chooses to tell us about herself ends up telling us something additional. WE FLEW OVER THE BRIDGE is candid, sometimes humorous, sometimes bordering on bitter, and almost quilt-like as she pieces together a wide range of topics, from the intensely personal to political and professional. Harlem at the close of the Renaissance, the art world's resistance to nonwhite artists, Black Power's resistance to feminism, combining marital life and parenthood with a career - all are viewed through her unique lens. For example, raised in a solidly middle-class environment by a mother who was a fashion designer and who inspired her interests in fabric art (and even collaborated at times), Ringgold seems to have felt overdressed at the revolution. She doesn't quite "fit in" but then again, I'm not sure she wanted to; she creates her own routes of activism. To any aspiring artist, I'd especially recommend Part III: Making Art, Making Waves, and Making Money.
