About the Author

Eliot Coleman has over thirty years' experience in all aspects of organic farming, including field vegetables, greenhouse vegetables, rotational grazing of cattle and sheep, and range poultry. He is the author of The New Organic Grower, Four-Season Harvest, and The Winter Harvest Handbook, as well as the instructional workshop DVD Year-Round Vegetable Production with Eliot Coleman. Coleman and his wife, Barbara Damrosch, presently operate a commercial year-round market garden, in addition to horticultural research projects, at Four Season Farm in Harborside, Maine.

About the Author

David Hughes is Assistant Professor at Penn State University (dual appointment to the Department of Entomology and the Department of Biology). His work has mostly focused on the behavior of social insects (wasps and ants) when infected by parasites. He has also collaborated extensively with Fred Thomas on the Hairworms system of cricket manipulation. He has published more than 32 papers in leading international journals including: Nature, TREE, Current Biology, American Naturalist, Biology Letters, Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology. In 2008 he edited a book for OUP with Patrizia D'Ettorre (P. D'Ettorre & D.P. Hughes (2008) Sociobiology of Communication. Oxford University Press).


Trained as experimental and theoretical ecologist, Jacques Brodeur is a full professor at the University of Montreal, Institut de Recherche en Biologie Vegetale, and holds the Canada Research Chair in Biocontrol. For the past 18 years, he has studied the biology and ecology of natural enemies used for biological control of arthropod pests. A long-term goal of his research is to identify the governing ecological principles and mechanisms of multispecies interactions within arthropod communities, and to apply these principles to develop reliable and predictive strategies to best take advantage of biological control agents. He has published a large number of papers on host-parasitoid relationships, including host manipulation.


Frederic Thomas is Directeur de Recherche at CNRS with a well established expertise in the field of host-parasite interactions, and especially host manipulation. He is leading a team entitled "Parasitically modified organisms". He has published more than 140 articles in international peer reviewed journals (1995-present), including Nature, Evolution, Trends in Ecology and Evolution, Ecology Letters, Ecology, American Naturalist, Proceedings of the Royal Society, Plos pathogen, Proteomics and also edited five books (two at Oxford University Press).

A good story for girls who love horses

I didn't know this series existed but as a child I read the Mystery of Horseshoe Canyon and found the series.

This story starts with Linda and her brother living with their grandparents at the Rancho Del Sol. She wants a horse that she can train. The mystery is that a friend sees strange lights at the edge of the ranch and tells Linda's grandfather. Stopping in at an Indian friend's cabin, Linda spies a young palomino that she names Chica D'Oro (Golden Girl). The horse becomes hers. Her grandfather, brother, and the Indian friend help her figure out the mystery of the lights and the disappearance of a lot of horses, Chica being one of them.

The series reminds me of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. It's a good mystery but the story is a bit drawn out with a lot of descriptions and filler story (this is why it reminds me of the Hardy Boys). Any young girl who loves horses (and maybe young boys as well) will love this story and the series.

Wonderful memories of these books from my childhood

I was looking these up for my daughter's 10th birthday, and I am so glad I found them. I was/am a horse crazy girl, and my Mom got these for me when I was a child. I LOVED these books and cannot wait to reread them all when Trinity is done with them. :)

About the Author

Hwei P. Hsu was a professor of electrical Engineering at Fairleigh Dickinson University. He has published several books which include Schaum's Outline of Analog and Digital Communications and Schaum's Outline of Probability, Random Variables, and Random Processes.

Comparing Editions

S&S is the infamous "make the cut class" in EE that determines if many undergrads will "make it" in further studies, or change majors. More recently, with the addition of non deterministic topics, S&S also has expanded its influence into applied mathematics, physics, of course electronics/communications, and many other sciences.

I have the old first 1995 edition, as well as 2010, and here are the differences:

1. The biggest PRINT change is between 95 and 10 (1 and 2 ed.), where two chapters, an appendix and moderate supplemental web material were added to expand the topic from deterministic to stochastic. An appendix was added on probability, and chapters on random signals and linear responses to random variable inputs.

2. This new addition includes all the old difference equation problems from the 90's, but of course does slightly update the stochastic material. Most of the 2010 edition is intact here, and I could only find a small sprinkling of "new text" additions (Schaum's tries to follow the top ten EE texts to supplement their problems with many additional examples). If this is for self study, you could probably get away with 10. However, the difficulty in getting this new edition is now ending at this writing and Amazon says shipping should no longer be a problem, and for the price...

3. The really big value add for 2014 are the videos. The 20 online problem solutions are extremely intuitive and thorough, certainly much more so than any of the major texts (Oppenheim and Chen being the most used, but Chaparro's Matlab text being key in today's PC driven environment--(Signals and Systems using MATLAB ). The 2010 links are now gone, but the 2014 videos are far superior due to the animation.

The only (mild) disappointment is that Schaum didn't add computing, code, software examples, etc. between these latest two editions, but I understand it, this 500 pager with low cost newsprint would double in size if they got into code. There ARE several new sections (called "bonuses") on matrices, which are pretty much the foundation for all the computed/ CAS solutions and math software packages. All the more reason to check out Chaparro, or your favorite Math/stats package. Some better schools even have signals and systems apis for Excel.

Finally, there is a great intro to circuit analysis which often today is moved to a separate course due to the amount of time that now has to be spent on not only Laplacians and Fourier transforms, but even Lagrangians today. Highly recommended to supplement the frankly weak example content of many of the most popular, and indeed painful, texts in use today. Won't make it easy, but will make it a lot easIER!

Simplify your life

This book is a life-saver compared to my textbook for Signals and Systems Analysis. It is only a study aide, however, so don't expect this book to replace your textbook. The Schaum's book's explanations in the chapters are very brief. The real benefit of this book comes from the numerous examples that are provided for each topic. Detailed proofs and theories will need to be researched through sources other than this text.

About the Author
Richard Alan Korb received his Ph.D. in Germanic Literature from the University of Pittsburgh in 1988. He has been teaching at Columbia University in New York City since 1994. As senior lecturer and German language program director, he specializes in pedagogy and teacher training, offering elementary, intermediate, and advanced German courses for undergraduates.

Much too expensive for the content.

German for Reading Knowledge is geared for that: learning to read German. This book is not focused on conversational German, but rather for those (generally graduate students preparing for language exams) who only need to acquire the ability to read German. From my own experience, we are currently using this book within a classroom setting, but many will need a resource to study the language independently.

This book is arranged into twenty-five chapters (Kapitel) and consists of 318 pages. Each chapter contains the grammatical lesson, vocabulary, practice sentences (the answers are available on the website), and a paragraph or more of German text for translation. The lessons begin with the nominative case and sein ("to be") conjugations for present and passive, then the subsequent chapters build upon the grammar. The readings, from chapter 1, are complex and challenge the student. These readings start the student with reading German, which is the end goal. The Appendices include some review on the case system, verbs (though a review of conjugations would have been nice here), advice on purchasing a dictionary, German scripts, and vocabulary.

There are several concerns with this text, though. Firstly, while there is a vocabulary list in each chapter, it does not include all of the vocabulary presented in the chapter. There is a considerable amount of vocabulary throughout the chapter that is not included in the list, and it would have been nice if the chapter list included all of the presented vocabulary. Additionally, even starting in the first chapter, the sentences and readings contain vocabulary which is neither in the vocabulary list nor in the vocabulary in the back of the book (e.g. `zu' is used, with two different meanings, in the first reading), requiring a dictionary from the start. Secondly, the sentences and readings include grammatical information that is not presented until later lessons. One cannot be expected to translate a sentence when the necessary grammar is not taught until a later lesson. Thirdly, the book has errors. In my case, there is a professor to correct the errors (ranging from incorrect information to including references to sentences included in earlier editions but absent from the seventh).

Fourthly, and this is by far the greatest concern: This book is incredibly overpriced. Right now, it is selling for $115 on Amazon. This is a small paperback book and I can find *no* justification for the exorbitant price, especially considering the problems with the book. I have bought expensive academic books and monographs in the past, but those were typically hardcover books and of incredible quality. Even for an academic textbook, this book is not worth the price. If it was offered for under $40, and was used in a classroom setting with an instructor to help make up for the problems/deficiencies of the text, I would recommend it (with prejudice). At this price, however, and with the concerns mentioned above, I cannot recommend this book.

bought for class, 7th edition is full of errors

For a 100+ dollar book you would expect that there would not be as many errors. I had the third and sixth edition lying around as well, but had to have the 7th for a class. The sixth edition did not have as many errors as the 7th. Some of the mistakes will lead students seriously stray if not pointed out, and are not simple typos. If you have any say, get the sixth edition.

Poorly written and expensive

I'm a student who's taking a German for reading course where we use this textbook, and I cannot recommend it as a good introduction to German grammar. While some the of grammatical concepts are adequately (though never clearly) explained in the chapters, the organization and pedagogical approach of the book leaves much to be desired. Here are some examples:

1) In the Grundwortschatz (the main vocabulary entry after each chapter), vocabulary items are introduced multiple times and given different (and occasionally incorrect) meanings. The exercises, furthermore, gloss words which have already appeared in the Grundwortschatz but skip complex and infrequently used words which the students cannot possibly be expected to know. One reading, for example, glosses gehören zu (to belong to), which we have already encountered, but omits the words großköpfige (macrocephalic) and Fußsohle.

4) As already mentioned, this book is overpriced. I come from a discipline where scholarly publications are pricey, but this book beats even OUP in that respect!

Nothing ventured, nothing gained – Ninety days to Eustillness

A new book by Dr. Frank J. Kinslow, When Nothing Works Try Doing Nothing – How Learning to Let Go Will Get You Where You Want to Go is all about techniques and facts to help achieve stillness and pure awareness of nothing!

Yes, I said nothing.

Dr. Kinslow is an author, chiropractor, Doctor of clinical spiritual counseling and a teacher for the deaf. He’s created a personal stillness technique called EuStillness.

I reviewed one of his books in 2013 called The Kinslow System. His new book is a follow-on to the stillness methods he taught then called EuFeeling.

Don’t let the names of his techniques scare you, they are simple focused methods of reaching stillness, similar to meditation, but with a different spin.

Here’s my take on this book. I’ll cut to the chase.

If you are a person who needs to know the facts, start at page one.

If you don’t need the introductory facts about why and how his methods work, go directly to page 33 through 34 and 41 through 45. Do not pass go, do not collect $200; here’s where you begin to find your “get out of jail free” card to start immediately using two of his 11 techniques.

Kinslow’s goal is for us to deepen our relationship with ourselves by practicing his techniques simply and explicitly spelled out chapter by chapter.

Kinslow’s claims that awareness of stillness between our activity allows us to see both sides of life more evenly. He claims that when we stop trying to fill the void with things and thoughts, it distracts us from reaching stillness.

EuStillness is like watching a beautiful sunset and knowing that this moment is filled with nothing but joy, peace and tranquility that we wish would never end. That’s the nothing he talks about.

Let me warn you now, on page 70 there is a secret scientific fact that really sent me into a tail-spin. It might send you into one too when you face the reality of the quantum physics facts that Kinslow reveals!

The best part of this book is his chapter wrap-up with one-liners he calls Main Points. This allows for a quick review of tips and techniques he explained in more detail in the chapter.

His eleven different techniques are a combination of science (quantum physics) mixed with mind/body/spirit exercises that lead us to become aware of the oneness of all things and the stillness that can change our lives.

It takes genuine effort and focus to practice his EuFeeling and EuStillness process, but nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I'm amazed!

The first book I read by Frank Kinslow was Beyond Happiness. What I read in this book made me buy all other. Now I'm reading When Nothing Works. It was not easy for me to understand the true implications of what Kinslow teaches and reach the state of Eufeeling and Pure Awareness. I practiced QE, experienced some peace, but soon the mind assumed the command again and I turned to fear, stress and anxiety. But I persisted. Gradually, I began to notice that my emotional symptoms began to dissolve and the periods of peace were increasingly lengthy. It has become increasingly easy to keep Pure Awreness and the accompanying Eufeeling. At the same time, my life began to change, though I did nothing to that change. I realized that Frank is right. What Frank teaches us is the most revolutionary technology of life that was ever invented. I read many books that taught me WHAT liberation and happiness are, but Frank Kinslow shows us HOW to experience them. Last book of Frank is the best of all. Maybe because I can already experience Eufeeling more often, is a true music for me to read When Nothing Works. At this point, I know what Frank teaches is true. Life begins to be a pleasant surprise and not the torment it was in the past. Problems of all kinds are solved spontaneously, by itself. If you practice the simple techniques (experiences) that Frank teaches and if you are constant and faithful to these experiences, paying them 15 minutes each day, I'm sure you will change your life to an unimaginable degree. It will be as if you had been born again. If you have not read any of Frank books, I recommend the Kinslow System and When Nothing Works. Eufeeling is also a great book.

UPDATE

We can perceive nothing. We can perceive THE nothing. At any time, we can divert the attention of thought or emotion and be aware of the void where there is neither thought nor emotion. We did not do this because no one had taught us that it was possible to do this and not only possible but easy. And so we spent our life convinced that we were forced to think or rather to be thought of by our thoughts. The church has taught us that there was a God ready to punish us if, for example, we did sex before marriage. And so we were full of fear and full of problems related to sex. How can we free ourselves of that fear and all other fears and anxieties that dominate us? Diverting our attention from fear to the void that is directly behind the fear. This is very different from the struggle against fear and negative thoughts. When we fight against something, it is because we believe that this thing threatens us. In other words, our own struggle creates the opponent. If there is no opponent, the fight is useless. Well, put your attention in the black emptiness just behind the thought/emotion and let yourself be carried away by this emptiness. The feeling is delightful: an exhilarating relief takes care of you. This is what Frank tells us we can easily do, or rather, we do not need to do because we just let us stay in the void that is just behind the thoughts and emotions, flowing in stillness. We allow it to take care of us.
One remark: the words are thoughts. Simple as it is the Frank explanation, is made of words and what we are invited to do is to go to where there is no words.

More fruits of awareness from a master teacher

If you are familiar with Frank Kinslow's teaching from books, cds, and workshops, you will know that he is your guide to the non-experience of pure awareness and the perceptual experience of eufeeling. So how can there be so much to write about them? The reason is that once we begin initiating QE, one of the benefits over time is a refinement of our perception of facets and levels of awareness, out of which arise new, subtle and powerful variations on the themes of pure awareness and eufeeling. Here are eleven more techniques which bring more fruits of awareness home. Or perhaps a better way to express it is that they awaken us to more fruits of awareness.

I particularly love the coin technique, the universal love technique, and the nothing technique. Those new to Dr. Kinslow's teaching need not worry about having read every other book before this one. The paradox is that, while refinement of perception comes with time and continues practice, the fruits of that refinement can be made available to the novice. Dr. Kinslow's deep understanding of the dynamics of Self and ego allow him to deduce techniques we all can benefit greatly from.

Another Kinslow book is always something to look forward to!
